AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward’s baseball team split two games with #6 Southern Arkansas Sunday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers took the first game, 8-7, and dropped the second contest, 9-5.
In game one, Southern Arkansas (1-1) got on the board early in the first inning. After a leadoff walk to designated hitter Dane Lucas, second baseman Cannon Lester delivered a two-run home run over the right field fence. The Mulerider’s scored again in the second inning when center fielder Gavan McCauley drove in a run on a groundout to second base.

Young, a former Freshman All-America selection at Mississippi State , will take over as assistant baseball coach. The Georgetown , Texas native played three seasons for the Bulldogs, finishing in the Top-10 all-time list for relief appearances. He was also named to the 2001 SEC All-Tournament Team and the 2001 SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player.

AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward’s baseball team won its second consecutive Heartland Conference championship by taking a pair of games from Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon. The Hilltoppers won the first game, 15-3, and defeated the Cardinals in the second contest, 14-10.
In game one, St. Edward’s (40-16, 38-11 HC) came out swinging against Incarnate Word (39-17, 35-14 HC). Left fielder Bradley Goldsmith led off the game with a solo home run to right field. Three batters later, designated hitter Robert Hays launched a two-run home run to left field.
The Hilltoppers struck again in the second inning. Goldsmith smashed his second home run of the day over the left field wall. This home run was of the two-run variety.

AUSTIN, Texas - St. Edward’s split a doubleheader against Incarnate Word Friday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas. The Hilltoppers took the first game, 10-3, and dropped game two, 9-8.
In game one, St. Edward’s (38-16, 36-11 HC) jumped all over Incarnate Word (39-15, 35-12 HC). The Hilltoppers rode a 15-hit attack to a, 10-3, victory. Josh Dale (8-1) picked up the victory. Dale, along with Chris Sharp, and David Wagner, held the Cardinals high powered offense to only five hits.

AUSTIN, Texas - St. Edward’s defeated Texas A&M International, 8-2, Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
St. Edward’s (37-15, 35-11 HC) got on the board first in this contest against Texas A&M International (18-34, 16-29 HC). The Hilltoppers scored in the second inning when designated hitter Robert Hays scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of first baseman Dexter Moreno.

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward’s took two games from Texas A&M International Friday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers grabbed a game one victory, 1-0, and defeated the Dustdevils again in the second contest, 3-2.
In game one, St. Edwards (36-15, 34-11 HC) was locked in a fierce pitchers dual with Texas A&M International (18-33, 16-28 HC). Hilltopper starter Josh Dale (7-1) threw a complete game shutout, allowing only seven hits and striking out four Dustdevil hitters.

AUSTIN, Texas - The Hilltoppers bashed six home runs and tallied 34 hits in a doubleheader sweep of UT-Permian Basin Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers routed the Falcons, 20-8, in game one and took the second contest, 8-0.
In game one, St. Edward’s (31-13, 29-9 HC) struck first. In the first inning, designated hitter Robert Hays drove in the first run on a single to right field. After a Sean Hilbe single through the right side, first baseman Dexter Moreno cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the left field wall.

AUSTIN, Texas - St. Edward’s split a doubleheader against Incarnate Word Friday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers took the first game, 7-5, and dropped game two, 10-7.
In game one, St. Edward’s (21-7, 19-4 HC) and Incarnate Word (19-9, 16-8 HC) both got on the board on the board in the first inning. The Cardinals scored two runs in the first inning on RBI hits by first baseman Dustin Walls and catcher Chris Solis. The Hilltoppers came right back with a four spot of their own in the bottom of the inning. Third baseman Brian Thomas started the scoring with an RBI single to right center. Center fielder Chris Dinges followed this up with an RBI triple. The biggest blow in the inning came when first baseman Dexter Moreno crushed a two-run home run to center field.

AUSTIN, Texas - St. Edward’s cranked out 11 hits in a seven-inning route of Texas A&M-Kingsville Tuesday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
Hilltopper left fielder Bradley Goldsmith led off the game with a solo home run to center field and set the pace for St. Edward’s (13-5) in its seven-inning ‘mercy rule’ victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville (11-8). The Hilltoppers cranked out 11 hits, with eight starters collecting at least one hit.
Third baseman Brian Thomas led the way for the Hilltoppers. Thomas went 3-5 with six RBI’s. Shortstop Jeremy Houser collected two hits, two RBI’s, and three runs scored. Center fielder Chris Dinges went 2-4. Second baseman Drew Cross added another two RBI’s as well.
St. Edward’s offense stole the show today but the Hilltopper pitching staff also played a key role in this win. James Belliveau (2-0) started the game and worked six innings, giving up three run (two earned runs) on seven hits and striking out four Javelina hitters. This victory marked the second time this season that Belliveau has defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday as they host Panhandle State. Game time is set for noon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

AUSTIN, Texas–St. Edward’s opened up Heartland Conference play sweeping two games from Newman Friday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers took the first game, 6-2, and won the second contest, 8-4.
In game one, St. Edward’s (2-3, 2-0 HC) jumped out to an early lead against Newman (0-2, 0-2 HC). The Hilltoppers got on the board in the second inning, scoring four runs on four hits. Center fielder Chris Dinges started off the inning with an infield single. After catcher Stephen McClanahan drew a walk, shortstop Anthony Spagnolo launched a three-run home run to left field. The Toppers tacked on another run in the inning when second baseman Drew Cross singled in left fielder Bradley Goldsmith.

Share The College Baseball Blog continues our series of interviews with head coaches checking in with St. Edward’s coach Rob Penders. He is entering his second season in charge of the Hilltoppers program after coming over from the University of Texas where he severed as the first base coach for Augie Garrido. Coach Penders come from a long line of family members who are coaches themselves. Rob’s brother Jim is the head baseball coach at Connecticut and his uncle is the head basketball coach at the University of Houston.
1) The St Edawrds Hilltoppers had a 43-15 overall record and went 31-9 in the Heartland Conference. Patrick Colgan (12-0, 1.97 ERA) is the only returning starting pitcher as you lost Niel Smith (7-3, 3.95 ERA) and Casey Plant(8-4, 4.31 ERA) but return closer David Wagner to the squad.
