PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With the 2009 baseball season underway, sophomore third baseman Greg Hopkins of St. John’s has been tabbed the first BIG EAST Player of the Week. Sophomore RHP Sean Black of Seton Hall has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Louisville, the 2008 BIG EAST tournament champion, has been unanimously chosen as the favorite to win the 2009 conference championship by the 12 BIG EAST head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams. In addition, Louisville swept both 2009 preseason individual honors. Junior third baseman Chris Dominguez was honored as Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, while junior Justin Marks was unanimously selected as Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

Head baseball coach Ed Blankmeyer announced the schedule for the 2009 season on Thursday. The 54-game schedule features non-conference trips to Florida, North Carolina and Utah, a pair of first-time opponents, five opponents that qualified for the 2008 NCAA Tournament and three-game sets at home against both Louisville, the defending BIG EAST Tournament Champions, and Notre Dame.
“Once again this season, we have a very challenging non-conference schedule that will help us prepare for BIG EAST play,” said Blankmeyer. “We are very excited about participating in the BIG EAST-Big Ten Challenge as well as the Keith LeClair Classic. Combined with our trip to Utah, we will be tested from the very beginning of the season.”

Two of the nation’s most prominent collegiate athletic conferences have come to an agreement to participate in a unique and ground-breaking season-opening baseball tournament in Florida. The inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, will feature 27 games February 20-22, 2009, at various spring training venues in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area, API Marketing announced today.
