June 6, 2008…What makes this day special? This day will always be remembered for a number of reasons. A moment of silence here please! On this day in 1944, the Battle of Normandy (D-Day) began, where 155,000 troops stormed the beaches in France. And don’t forget in 1968, the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy by Sirhan Sirhan in Los Angeles. Did you forget? What do you say we move on to lighter but, still historical news? That same fateful day in 1968, Dodgers Hall-of-Famer, Don Drysdale threw his 58th consecutive shutout inning to set a MLB record.

The Fullerton Super Regional started out on a slow note, especially if you were stuck in the So Cal traffic. The parking lot was packed! Tailgaters from both Stanford and Fullerton littered the lot in their Cardinal and Orange gear, and cans of empty libations. Read the rest of this entry »
When Jeff Kaplan and Jeremy Bleich went head to head early in the season, the Stanford hitters got the best of Kaplan, knocking him out of the game after only an inning. Stanford went on to sweep Fullerton, but that, as coach Dave Serrano said, was a different Fullerton team, one still searching to find its identity. Fullerton turned its season around and played well enough to garner a #5 national seed, but lacked the same tenacity they showed in the second half of the season tonight as they fell to Stanford 4-3 in a lackluster offensive effort. STANFORD, Calif. - Sean Ratliff’s grand slam, his 20th home run of the season, capped off a six-run fifth inning that provided the Stanford baseball team the boost it needed to pull ahead of Pepperdine and hold it together for a 9-7 victory Monday over the Waves (38-21). The win sends the Cardinal (37-22-2) to the program’s seventh Super Regional appearance next weekend, where it will face the winner of Monday night’s Fullerton Regional final between UCLA and CS Fullerton. GAME ONE - #1 STANFORD VS. #4 UC-DAVIS
Top ranked Stanford used a five run ninth inning to stave off elimination in the Palo Alto Regional. The Cardinal found themselves down 4-3 heading into the top of the ninth but a five run inning propelled the Cardinal into the championship game against 2-seed Pepperdine.
STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford baseball team lives on at the NCAA Regional, defeating the Arkansas Razorbacks, 5-1, in an elimination game Saturday at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Randy Molina had three hits Saturday, including his fifth home run of the season, and Austin Yount tossed five innings of one-run ball and struck out five to earn his fifth win. GAME ONE - #2 PEPPERDINE VS. #3 ARKANSAS
Pepperdine defeated Arkansas 4-3 in the opening round matchup between the 2-seed Waves and the 3-seed Razorbacks. The Razorbacks and Waves traded runs in the second and fourth sending the game to a 2-2 tie heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth the Waves’ Chase D’Arnaud homered to break the tie and the Waves added an insurance run after Nate Simon reached on a fielding error by the first baseman. Simon stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and was brought home by a Denny Duron single. Arkansas tried to rally in the top of the ninth scoring a run to cut the lead to 4-3 but were unable to score a runner from third with two outs.
Nathan Newman picked up his seventh win the of the season going 6.2 innings giving up two runs. Nick Gaudi picked up his 13th save of the season. Cliff Springston took the loss for the Razorbacks giving up all four Pepperdine runs.
The Stanford Cardinals enter the Regionals with a 33-21 record while having a 14-10 record in the Pac-10. They will be joined by Pepperdine who has a 36-18 record while finishing second in the West Coast Conference with a 14-6 record. Arkansas will join the clubs as they finished with a 34-22 record and a 14-15 record in the SEC which kept the Razorbacks out of the SEC Conference Tourney. The last team in the Regional is UC Davis who went 34-22 with a 13-11 record in the Big West. Read the rest of this entry »
The Pac-10 Conference concluded the 24 game conference season this Memorial Day Weekend and after defeating Arizona on Thursday night, the Arizona State Sun Devils clinched their second straight conference title.Stanford finished second, UCLA finished third.Arizona, CAL, Washington, Oregon State, USC and Washington State wrap up the standings.
Five Pac-10 schools were selected by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee to participate in the postseason, and given a chance to head to Omaha.Arizona, Arizona State, California, Stanford and UCLA were invited, while two time defending National Champion Oregon State was left out despite a three game sweep of Pacific to conclude its season. USC snaps a six game loosing streak.Stanford’s loss drops them into a tie with ASU for first place in the Pac-10.Derek Perren went 2 for 3 for USC with a double, a home runs and 5 RBI’s. Jason Castro had another good day for Stanford, going 2 for 5 with a home run and 3 RBI’s.
ASU scored 10 runs in the second inning on only 3 hits.ASU’s win and Stanford’s loss puts both teams in a tie for first pace in the Pac-10 standings.The game was concluded after seven innings due to a combination of the 10 run mercy rule and Sunday travel requirements.Ryan Sontag was perfect at the plate for ASU going 3 for 3 including a triple.Petey Paramore’s only hit for ASU was a two run home run into a very strong wind blowing in.Cal starter Daniel Wolford only faced two batters and left the game after developing blisters.Dwight Tanaka of Cal was hit in the batting helmet by a pitch and left the game. After pitching a complete game on Friday, Mike Leake started at 1B in place of an injured Ike Davis on Saturday for ASU.He was fantastic defensively and even better offensively, driving in the winning run with a 3 RBI triple in the 7th.David Cooper had 3 singles for Cal, but no RBI’s. while Dylan Tonneson hit a 3 run home run to tie the game up in the 6th, but had trouble behind the plate as the catcher.
Stanford didn’t need Erik Davis to pitch a complete game as the offense exploded for 24 hits.Toby Gerhart came on as a pinch hitter and went 2 for 2 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI’s, while Jason Castro went 4 for 6 with a triple and 4 RBI’s.
OSU snapped Arizona’s 13 game winning streak.Lonnie Lechelt goes 3 for 4 with a double and a run for OSU, while Tanner Robles picks up the win throwing 7.2 innings, walking 0, striking out 7, while giving up only 2 hits and 2 earned runs. Read the rest of this entry »
