McKinney, TX (July 20, 2008) –
The Brazos Valley Bombers fell to the McKinney Marshals 5-1 today in a game full of frustrations. The Bombers struggled to get on base all afternoon against the Marshals’ trio of pitchers, Joey Centanni, Hunter Hill and Adam Scott and only managed three hits.
The game remained scoreless going into the third inning, but the Bombers were finally able to get on the board. Brian Nelson got things started by leading things off with a walk. With Chad Colbert at the plate, Nelson stole second and advanced to third as shortstop J.B. Brown mishandled the throw. Zach Grichor came to the plate next and grounded out to the second baseman, scoring Nelson to put the Bombers in the lead.

The East Texas Pump Jacks are so accustomed to late-inning comebacks that sometimes it might appear the Jacks are just toying with the opposition, giving early leads only to steal them away.
It’s a dangerous game to play, and sometimes it doesn’t always go according to plan. Such was the case Saturday night, when the Pump Jacks fell to the Coppell Copperheads, 5-2, although the home team had the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The game marked the home team’s return to Driller Park after a long road trip, a six-game, seven-day affair that saw them visit every other team in the league. The Jacks went 4-2 on the trip and hoped to build on that momentum coming home.

The famous words uttered before every episode of “ABC’s Wide World Of Sports” spoke of the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
In the last two games, the East Texas Pump Jacks experienced both, and against the very same opponent.
24 hours after dropping a hard-luck decision to the McKinney Marshals, the Pump Jacks earned a measure of redemption, taking a 5-3 extra-inning victory in McKinney. The Jacks scored two runs in the top of the tenth to up their record to 4-0 in extra inning games.

Sam Strickland pitched eight strong innings, but the Bombers were unable to put a run across the board as they lost to the Coppell Copperheads 3-0. Taylor Davis hit a three-run home run in the first inning to put the Copperheads on top and that’s where the score stood for the rest of the game. The Bombers missed Todd Cunningham, who sat out his third consecutive game with a lower back strain.
The Copperheads never looked back after Davis crushed Strickland’s second pitch of the at-bat over the left field fence to go up 3-0. The Bombers threatened several times with runners in scoring position, but they were never able to make the clutch hit. Taylor Zambreski had his second consecutive multi-hit game for the Bombers since joining the team and made several outstanding plays in left field. He will be serving as the everyday left fielder now that Tyler Huelsing is gone for the summer. Huelsing is headed back home to Tennessee to have his wisdom teeth pulled and will not be back in time for the playoffs.

Parting is such sweet sorrow, even in baseball.
Scott Copeland made potentially his last start of the Pump Jacks’ inaugural season Saturday night and he made it count, pitching seven shutout innings in a 5-0 whitewash of the Coppell Copperheads.
Copeland, a sophomore who starred for at Panola College the last two seasons, will be heading to Southern Miss beginning next fall. The Golden Eagles would like to minimize the number of innings for Copeland, who was the top starter for Panola this past spring. As a result, the White Oak native is not expected to make another start for the Pump Jacks this summer.
