With the season nearly half over, kuathletics.com checks in with the several current Jayhawks who are playing on summer collegiate teams. Many of these players compete with the best underclassmen in college baseball during their time away from KU.

# Buck Afenir (Jr., catcher) is enjoying a productive season for the San Diego Waves of the Western Baseball Association. As of July 8, the Escondido, Calif. native was hitting .315 with 11 doubles, three homers and 23 RBIs. However, Afenir’s most surprising number of the summer is the five stolen bases he has successfully attempted. He has never been called on to steal a base at KU.

Pinckard named Northwoods All-Star; Miller on the shelf; Volz strong for Team USA

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Baylor redshirt freshman Brooks Pinckard was named to the 2008 Northwoods League All-Star Game, the league announced late last week. The game will be played Monday at Warner Park in Madison, Wis. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT, and the game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.

Pinckard, who has pitched and played the infield for the Eau Claire Express, was named to the team as an infielder. He ranks sixth in the Northwoods League with a .331 batting average. Pinckard has tallied 40 hits, 21 runs, 18 RBI, eight doubles and two triples, and he is 12-for-17 in stolen base attempts. He also has posted an 0-1 record on the mound with one save and a 1.29 ERA. In 7.0 innings, Pinckard has allowed one run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

After storming into second place with a week of nearly flawless baseball, the Bombers struggled mightily in the field and lost to the McKinney Marshals 12-3. The Bombers made six errors and left the bases loaded twice in the loss. With the game out of reach, head coaches Brent Alumbaugh and Jim Gatewood decided to call the game after seven innings to avoid any injuries. 500 lucky Bombers fans went home with T-Shirts, courtesy of Brazos Valley Bank’s Saturday Giveaway.

When Yogi Berra famously stated, “It ain’t over til it’s over,” he wasn’t speaking specifically about the East Texas Pump Jacks.

But he may as well have been.

The Pump Jacks staged another comeback to steal a victory from the visiting McKinney Marshals, 3-2, at Driller Park on Fireworks Friday.

The winning rally began with the Jacks down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth. Down 2-1, J.D. Dunn dropped a ball into right-center field that he stretched into a double. Garrett Smith followed with a grounder to third that elicited an errant throw from McKinney third baseman Mike Walker. The wild throw allowed Dunn to score the tying run and left Smith on second base.

Hard-fought, close games can be the most gratifying to win.

They can also be among the toughest to lose.

The East Texas Pump Jacks can attest to the latter following Tuesday night’s 4-3 loss to the defending champion Coppell Copperheads at Driller Park. The Copperheads built a 4-0 lead before Josh Riley’s three-run double in the eighth inning closed the gap. But ultimately the Jacks ran out of time before they were able to get the tying run across.

Coppell built an early 2-0 lead with runs in each of the second and third innings off of East Texas starting pitcher Clint Helms. Helms (1-2) gave up an RBI single in the second and allowed a run on a wild pitch in the third, but otherwise pitched six innings unscathed. He allowed the two earned runs on four hits and four walks, striking out four.

For college students, summer is usually reserved for going home and relaxing before retuning to the grind in the fall. For some member of the University of Texas at Tyler baseball team and coaching staff, the summer is a time to hone their baseball skills in preparation for the upcoming season.

This summer, seven members of the Patriots’ baseball team and three coaches are using their break to get better and improve on this past season’s 36-9 record and get ready for the 2009 season. In the summer of 2008, UT Tyler will have players and coaches on ten different teams in eight different leagues playing in locations such as Alaska, Kansas, New York, Texas, New Jersey, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and even Canada.

The guys over at PG Crosschecker debut their weekly feature called the Summer 16:

PG Crosschecker begins its weekly Summer 16 ranking of summer college teams, with 12 different leagues represented in the initial ranking. Team USA, which will play primarily an international schedule, is not eligible. Typically, the Cape Cod League, which produced 217 players who were selected in this year’s baseball draft, dominate the rankings, but only two Cape teams—unbeaten Cotuit and Harwich, both 3-0—are represented this time. Cotuit begins the season at No. 1.

Other than College Baseball’s top eight teams in Omaha, most of America has turned their full attention to the ever turbulent summer. This means summer leagues, coaching movement and draft watching. Things are no different at Vanderbilt, which for the third straight year failed to escape the Regionals. But that doesn’t mean the summer has not been active already.

On the Cape

Vanderbilt features six roster members on teams in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Friend of the College Baseball Blog Jarred Amato (publisher of SportsVU, a Vanderbilt Sports Blog) traveled to Wareham to spend some time with Vanderbilt sophomore leftfielder Steven Liddle as he started his season with the Gatemen. The article, found here, is a great glimpse into the magic of the league and what it means to the players and the community proper.
