University of New Orleans head baseball coach Tom Walter is looking at 17 new faces on his 2009 roster, and the fifth-year coach will get a lot of opportunities to see them play during the next week.
The Privateers will kick off the 2009 UNO Fall World Series on Saturday and will mix in a Sunday game with in-state rival Nicholls State as part of a busy weekend at Maestri Field.

 Jon Prevost hit his fourth home run during the Blood Series to lead off Tuesday

Combining a dominant pitching performance with an early offensive explosion, the Maroon Team took the final game of the ULM baseball team’s annual ‘Blood Series,’ 5-0, Tuesday afternoon at Warhawk Field.
Tony Dischler kept the Gold bats in check, allowing only one hit and a total of three baserunners in six innings of work for the victory. Cade Bowen worked the final three innings for the save, allowing four baserunners all via the base on balls.

Kendall Rogers has written a great article about the baseball programs in the state of Tennessee. He ranks all the schools with the Vanderbilt Commodores as the best program but we all know that isn’t a real surprise. Corbin has really developed a solid program in Nashville and keeps bringing in some great recruits.The University of Tennessee comes in at the runners up spot under second year head coach Todd Raleigh. Jon Prevost delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single in the top of the eighth inning to lead the Maroon Team to a 16-10 come-from-behind victory in game two of the ULM Blood Series Friday afternoon at Warhawk Field.
The Maroon Team rallied from deficits of 6-1 and 10-6 during the game to tie the best-of-five series at one game each.

 Matt Laird went 4-for-6 with four RBIs
Matt Laird went 4-for-6 with four RBIs to lead the Gold Team in a 16-11 blowout victory over the Maroon Squad in the opening game of the annual ULM Blood Series Wednesday night at Warhawk Field.
Tom O’Gorman (4-for-6), Boomer Blanchard (3-for-5), Ryan McMillan, Kelvin York, Craig Scelfo and Nick Wade all recorded multiple hits for the Gold Team as they pounded out 20 for the game. Blanchard also stole three bases and McMillan had the game’s lone home run.

 Ryan Mollica got an RBI single in a 1-0 victory on Wednesday evening.
The FIU Golden Panthers baseball team took on the Ontario Blue Jays on Wednesday evening with FIU coming up with a 1-0 victory. FIU used a combination of four pitchers who combined on a great pitching performance where they only allowed a single hit. Scott Rembisz started the game where he went three innings facing the minimum while striking out two batters. Justin Leith followed him to the mound where he went two innings allowing only a walk for the only base runner while striking out three hitters. Read the rest of this entry »

Senior first-baseman Ryan Bohanan enters the 2009 baseball season as the Jags’ top returning hitter. He hit .333 (63-for-189) with nine homers and 42 RBI a year ago, and after gaining a year of experience at South Alabama, he looks to put up even more impressive numbers this season.
Through the first five weeks of fall practice, Bohanan leads the team with a .500 batting average (29-for-58). He’s also the team leader in hits (29), runs (23), total bases (47), slugging percentage (.810), on-base percentage (.567), and OPS (1.377). His eight doubles trail on Jake Overstreet’s 10, and Bohanan is second to Zach Grichor (22) with 19 RBI. He’s also drawn eight walks against only five strikeouts.

Laird powers USA Baseball past Northwest Florida State 16-2
MOBILE, Ala. – Sean Laird homered twice and drove in five runs as South Alabama cruised to a 16-2 victory over Northwest Florida State Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field.
Northwest Florida State took an early lead a pair of runs off Jags’ starter Miles Ethridge, but USA answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Ryan Bohanan got the Jags started with a triple, and Derek O’Reilly brought him in with a sacrifice fly. Laird put two more runs on the board with a homer to left field. USA BASEBALL FACES FIRST OUTSIDE COMPETITION WITH PAIR OF WEEKEND GAMES
After four weeks of intrasquad scrimmages, South Alabama baseball takes on its first outside competition of the season with a pair of exhibition games this weekend. The Jags host Meridian Community College Saturday at noon and Northwest Florida State College Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games are at Stanky Field.
Saturday’s game against Meridian is scheduled for seven innings, but the teams are allowed to play for up to four hours, so they will play a second game with the remaining time. After the seven-inning game ends, there will be a brief break for field maintenance before the new game begins. The second game will last as long as possible within the initial four-hour timeframe.

SOUTH ALABAMA BASEBALL ANNOUNCES 2009 SCHEDULE
South Alabama baseball head coach Steve Kittrell unveiled the Jags’ 2009 baseball schedule Tuesday. The 54-game regular season schedule features 27 games at Stanky Field.
The Jags play 13 games against teams that participated in the 2008 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, as well as 11 games against teams that were estimated to have finished 2008 in the RPI top-50.
