BEIJING, CHINA — A four-run fifth inning highlighted by Taylor Teagarden’s two-run double and a two-run homer from Jason Donald helped lift the U.S. Olympic Baseball Team to an 8-4 win over Japan clinching the bronze medal for Team USA. Matt LaPorta and Matt Brown added home runs as well as the U.S. rallied from an early three-run deficit to earn the victory. Team USA finishes Olympic competition with a 6-3 record.

The United States Olympic Baseball team is taking on the Cuban Olympic team in the semifinals of the Olympic Baseball Tournament at 6 am Eastern time on Friday. The United States is expected to start San Diego State junior to be Stephen Strasberg to the mound where he was outstanding against the Netherlands in his only Olympic start. BEIJING — The field is set for the medal rounds at the Summer Olympics, with the United States getting its rematch against Cuba on Friday and unbeaten Korea meeting Japan in the other semifinal.
That was determined by the Americans’ 4-2 victory over Japan in 11 innings on Wednesday night at Wukesong Main Field. Capitalizing this time on the new extra-innings rule, the U.S. broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 11th on three consecutive singles, and then closer Casey Weathers escaped a bases-loaded jam after allowing Japan two runs. Canada leads 1-0 after one inning.Canada’s run came on an RBI double by Emerson Frostad (Lewis-Clark State).
8:15 PM PDT: Canada leads 3-0 after two innings. Emmanuel Garcia hit an RBI triple, then scored on a ground out by Michael Saunders.
8:35 PM: Canada leads 4-0 after three innings, and they are hitting Anderson at will. The fourth run came from an RBI single by Adam Stern (Nebraska). Great defensive play by Stubby Clapp (Texas Tech) at second base in the bottom of the third.

BEIJING — Playing for the first time under the new extra-innings rule for Olympic competition, Cuba scored twice in the top of the 11th inning with the U.S. only able to plate one run in the bottom half, giving Cuba a 5-4 victory over the U.S. Olympic Baseball Team on Friday afternoon at the Wukesong Main Field. The USA Olympic Baseball team takes on Cuba tonight at 11:30 pm Eastern time. The game can be watched online for free by clicking here.
Trevor Cahill will take the ball for the US team and Cuba will send Luis Miguel Rodriguez.
UPDATE #1: Cuba and Team USA is tied at 2 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
UPDATE #2: Cuba and USA start the tenth inning tied at 3. Cuba’s Bell hit a leadoff triple to center field to start the inning off well. Kevin Jepsen is able to get the next two batters to strikeout and then gets the final batter of the inning to ground out to third base. Team USA is coming up to bat right now.
UPDATE #3: Taylor Teagarden gets hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the tenth off well for Team USA. Jason Donald lays a bunt down to get Teagarden to second with one out. Cuba gets the next two guys to pop up. We are off to the 11th inning. This is going to be the first time the new rules of having two runners on base to start the inning is in effect.
UPDATE #4: Cuba scores two runs in the top of the 11th while USA only scores one in the bottom of the 11th so the Cubans stay undefeated while USA drops to 1-2 in the tourney.

UPDATE #1: Laporta hits a big home run as USA puts four runs on the board and Strasburg sends them down 1,2,3 as USA leads 5-0.
UPDATE #2: Strasburg has his perfect game broken up with a walk but has a no-hitter going. 5-0 after 5 innings.
UPDATE #3: Strasburg’s no hit bid is broken up in the seventh inning. Team USA is up 6-0 heading into the 8th inning.
UPDATE #4: Rain Delay in the 8th inning.

BEIJING — Korea scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally and defeat Team USA, 8-7, in the Olympic opener on Wednesday evening at Wukesong Field 2.
Team USA had fought back with three runs of its own in the top of the ninth inning to take a one-run, lead but the Koreans mounted their own comeback, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Jongwook Lee to earn the victory. The Olympic Baseball Tournament starts up this evening/early Saturday morning with a great game between Japan and Cuba that begins at 7 am Eastern time. The United States will open against South Korea, while the Canadian squad will play China, and Chinese Taipei will play the Netherlands. All the Games will be available online by clicking here. The USA Olympic Team will begin play on Wednesday August 13th when they open up round robin play against South Korea. It will be the first game in the Olympics for Team USA since their Gold Medal victory over Cuba in the 2000 Olympics behind the right arm of Ben Sheets. We break down the position players today with some background information. We will be checking out the pitchers on Sunday as we continue our preview of Team USA.
