BEIJING — Korea scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally and defeat Team USA, 8-7, in the Olympic opener on Wednesday evening at Wukesong Field 2.
Team USA had fought back with three runs of its own in the top of the ninth inning to take a one-run, lead but the Koreans mounted their own comeback, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Jongwook Lee to earn the victory. The Olympic Baseball Tournament starts up this evening/early Saturday morning with a great game between Japan and Cuba that begins at 7 am Eastern time. The United States will open against South Korea, while the Canadian squad will play China, and Chinese Taipei will play the Netherlands. All the Games will be available online by clicking here. The USA Olympic Team will begin play on Wednesday August 13th when they open up round robin play against South Korea. It will be the first game in the Olympics for Team USA since their Gold Medal victory over Cuba in the 2000 Olympics behind the right arm of Ben Sheets. We break down the position players today with some background information. We will be checking out the pitchers on Sunday as we continue our preview of Team USA. Kansas head baseball coach Ritch Price is serving as an assistant coach with the U.S. Collegiate National Team this summer. Price’s team is just two wins away from becoming the first national team in 30 years to go through the summer undefeated. The team has already defeated the Cuban national team twice this year, becoming the first U.S. team to accomplish this. Kuathletics.com caught up with Price as he helps his team prepare for the final games this weekend.
1) How has the experience with USA Baseball been this summer? In what capacity are you serving with the coaching staff?
RP: It’s been an unbelievable experience to work with some of the best players in the country, and compete against international teams for the first time. I’m the infield coach, coach first base, and throw bp (batting practice) and hit pre-game infield/outfield everyday. I work under one of the best coaches in the college game in Rob Walton (of Oral Roberts).

UPDATE #1: Still 0-0 into the Bottom of the Tenth. Japan is currently up to bat. Mike Minor is still on the mound for Team USA as he already has one out in the bottom of the tenth.
UPDATE #2: Hunter Morris gets a pinch hit single in the 12th inning to drive home Micah Gibbs with the first run of the game. Kendall Volz shut the door in the bottom of the 12th inning to complete a perfect summer for Team USA. A full recap will be posted as soon as we get it.

Team USA will look to end the summer with a perfect record on Sunday when they take on the Japanese team in the World University Games Final. Team USA has already picked up the Haarlem Baseball Week title with two victories over the Cuban Olympic Team and will have a perfect record this summer if they can beat Japan on Sunday. Mike Minor of Vanderbilt is expected to start on the mound for the United States as he knocked off Cuba a few weekends ago in the Haarlem Baseball Week championship game.
