NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State starter Jimmy Heard allowed just two runs in 8-2/3 innings and gave up nine hits with five strikeouts as he led his Demons to a 5-2 Southland Conference baseball win over Nicholls State in front of a large, noisy crowd on Friday.

Southeastern Louisiana, UT Arlington and Texas State are tied atop the league standings at 8-4. This weekend two of those teams meet. Southeastern Louisiana visits UT Arlington while Texas State travels to Central Arkansas. In other league action, Nicholls State is at Northwestern State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is at Lamar, UTSA is at Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State visits McNeese State.

McNeese State 12 Central Arkansas 11
Jace Peterson singled in the winning run from third in the bottom of the 11th inning for a 12-11 McNeese State victory over Central Arkansas here Sunday afternoon.
The Cowboys had held the lead throughout the game and had gone into the eighth inning with a 11-5 edge. In that frame, however, the Bears’ Richey Irvin belted the first pitch from Cowboy reliefer Tommy Luce over the right field wall for a grand slam.

McNeese State and Central Arkansas split a Southland Conference twinbill here Saturday, collecting almost 50 hits between them.
McNeese won the first game 10-5 with the use of three home runs while Central Arkansas took the second, slamming out 17 hits.

The Rice baseball team got some solid pitching in surrendering just four hits and shortstop Rick Hague’s two-run homer in the fifth inning gave the Owls’ the lead for good on the way to a 6-3 victory over visiting No. 1 Texas before a rowdy, record-setting crowd of 6,193 Tuesday night at Reckling Park.

Sophomore Micah Gibbs drove in the game-winning run on a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead No. 5 LSU past Northwestern State, 2-1, Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium.
Coming in to pinch hit for first baseman Buzzy Haydel with one out and the bases loaded, Gibbs drilled a 2-2 offering into the gap in right center field to break open a 1-1 tie and bring senior Derek Helenihi home for the victory.

Senior shortstop Jeremiah Sammy reached base three times, drove in a career-high three RBI and hit his first career home run to lead Lamar past Central Arkansas, 9-4, at Bear Stadium Saturday.
While Sammy was doing his damage out of the seven spot in the lineup, Lamar’s top five batters in the order – Tyler Link, Brian Taylor, Steven Tucker, Chris Dunkin and Brent Harris – for 11 hits and the Cardinals’ other six RBI.

Lamar 2 at Central Arkansas 10
Central Arkansas scored 10 unanswered runs and Lamar failed to get the timely hits as the Cardinals fell to the Bears, 10-2, at Bear Stadium in the opening game of a three-game Southland Conference series Friday.
Lamar (13-4, 2-2) had just eight hits and left 12 runners on base, including nine in scoring position. Brian Taylor led the Cardinals offesnively with a 3-for-5 day which included two doubles and a run scored.

The Texas State baseball team held a 9-1 lead over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with Kane Holbrooks on the mound, but costly relief in the final frame nearly saw the win disappear, but the Bobcats managed to hold off the charge for a 9-6 win at Whataburger Field Saturday afternoon.
Texas State improves to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in league action, while A&M-Corpus Christi falls to 1-6 and 0-2, respectively.

Texas State 7, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at the plate but came up short 7-4 in their Southland Conference opener versus Texas State at Whataburger Field on Friday night.
The Islanders drop to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the Southland Conference with the loss, while Texas State is now 4-2 and 1-0.
