SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head baseball coach Sherman Corbett announced Friday that he has promoted Brett Lawler to assistant coach and Josh Lee has joined the program as a volunteer assistant.
Lawler, who has been the Roadrunners’ volunteer coach the last two seasons, replaces Mike Clement, who accepted a position with Texas A&M last month. The College Station native will work with the team’s hitters and mentor the catchers and outfielders defensively.

The 2009 baseball season begins Friday with 11 of the 12 Southland Conference teams in action. Texas State is the first conference team to play Friday, meeting Arkansas State in the UT Arlington/Hilton Invitational at 11 a.m., CDT. Stephen F. Austin, the lone league team not opening its season on Friday, tosses out its first pitch Saturday at 7 p.m. at Louisiana-Monroe at the ULM Warhawk Classic. Saturday’s Southland schedule features four doubleheaders. Lamar, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTSA all have a twin bill scheduled. All 12 schools are in action on Sunday.

Rivals.com College Baseball Editor Kendall Rogers put out a great article previewing the Top 10 Seniors for the 2009 season. He names your typical players like Michael Rockett of Texas-San Antonio and Preston Guilmet of Arizona. He also brings up Nate Lape of Marshall who flies under the radar as he plays for the West Virginia based school. The biggest name on his list is Ole Miss’ pitcher Scott Bittle who appeared in 27 games with a ERA of 1.78. He held opponents to a .145 batting average against. The rest of the list includes: Luke Anders of Texas A&M, Cory Harrilchak of Elon, Chris Fetter of Michigan, Chris Rusin of Kentucky, Ben Orloff of UC Irvine and Ben Soignier of Louisiana-Monroe. SAN MARCOS – Steven Siers pitched seven full innings at Alumni Field blanking Southeastern Louisiana for his first career shut out, as the Texas State Bobcats run-ruled the Lions 11-0 Saturday afternoon in Hammond, La.
Texas State wasted no time putting the first run on the board when Laurn Randell put a two-out base hit into right field at the top of the first. On a wild pitch to Paul Goldschmidt, Randell advanced to second and Goldschmidt brought him around with a shot to centerfield.

Share The University of Texas-San Antonio is hosting a great tournament on the opening weekend. Joining the Roadrunners this season is Army, Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas Tech, and Oral Roberts.
