Utah signs Eight for 2011
SALT LAKE CITY – Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg announced the signing of eight student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Five high school players and three junior college transfers will join the Utes next season. Coming from high school are Trey Nielsen (3B, Skyline HS, Utah), Cory Hunt (2B, Jordan HS, Utah), Ben Mordini (RHP, Cherry Creek HS, Colo.), Luke West (RHP, Juan Diego Catholic HS, Utah), Josh Alexander (OF, Mountain Pointe HS, Arizona) while James Brooks (SS/Utility, Cochise College, Arizona), Derek Christensen (RHP, SLCC, Utah) and Dustin Hobbs (RHP/Yavapai College) are the junior college transfers.

Share Both Texas State and Texas wrapped up their fall practice schedule with a 14 inning scrimmage between the two clubs. The scrimmage is used to give the players a chance to get a look at some different pitchers besides their teammates during fall practice.

(Victoria, TX) The Victoria Generals have announced the re-signing of two more stand-out players from their inaugural season. Third baseman Brian Nephew and left-handed pitcher Covey Morrow are set to return to help the Generals defend their regular season championship crown.

Share The Victoria (TX) Advocate has an excellent feature on Texas State head coach Ty Harrington who just completed his tenth season with the school. He has been influential in getting the program on the national stage as they had an excellent 2009 season which saw them go 41-17. It was good enough to get them the number 2 seed in the Austin TX regional before going 0-2 with tough losses to Boston College and Army.

OMAHA, Neb. – The American Baseball Coaches Association announced the ABCA/Rawlings Sporting Goods All-American teams on Wednesday, June 17.
Among the First Team honorees are six players participating in this year’s College World Series including Arizona State starting pitcher Mike Leake, LSU starting pitcher Louis Coleman, Arizona State catcher Carlos Ramirez, UNC first baseman Dustin Ackley, ASU outfielder Jason Kipnis and Virginia utility player Danny Hultzen. In the second day of action at the Austin (Tx) Regional, the elimination game featured a matchup between Army from the Patriot League and Texas State of the Southland Conference. Army lost their opening game to Texas 3-1 and Texas State wasted a 3 run ninth inning lead to lose to Boston College 8-7. Read the rest of this entry »

The first game saw Boston College as the 3 seed take on the 2 seed Texas State. Texas State built a 5-2 lead going into the top of the 9th inning. But, Boston College comes storming back to take a 8-5 lead in the top of the 9th. Texas State Paul Goldschmidt delivered a two run Home Run to cut the Eagles lead to 8-7 in the bottom of the inning but were not able to get closer.

Share Texas will be hosting the regional at the newly refurbish UFCU-Disch Falk Field. The last time Texas held a regional at the friendly confines was back in 2006 and Texas will be looking to get back on track in this regional. Joining Texas will be the the two seed Texas State, which is from the Southland Conference where they won the regular season title but lost in the Championship game to Sam Houston State. The three seed will be Boston College who is making their first appearance in the NCAA Tourney in 42 years. They finished the regular season 3rd in the ACC’s Atlantic Division. The 4th seed comes from the Patriot League with the Army Black Knights. They won the Patriot League tournament in a two game sweep over Lafayette to earn the automatic bid.
