Fall Scrimmage Report- University of TexasPosted by: Donald J. Boyles in 2008 Fall Games, Big 12, CBB VisitAugie and Company have already started on the “Road to Omaha”. Today’s intrasquad scrimmage was held at the Dell Diamond due to Dish Falk Field turf being replace with Field Turf. This is the third straight fall that Texas has had to use the Round Rock Express facility as the last two years Disch-Falk Field was being remodel. The scrimmage took place in front of about 12-15 scouts. It was open to the public so, I took advantage of a fantastic late summer afternoon to go and watch some College Baseball. Disch Falk Field moving to Field Turf??Posted by: Donald J. Boyles in Big 12, General CBB NewsEver since the University of Texas finish remodeling Disch Falk Field last December it has been widely speculated that they would replace the turf with Field Turf. As of today there was a crew pulling out the old turf. With fall ball not starting until the middle of September and the summer camps are all over, this will allow the crew undivided attention on the turf. Tags: Big 12, New Turf, Texas

Could Jordan Danks be headed back to Texas?Posted by: Donald J. Boyles in 2008 Top Players, Big 12, MLB DraftThe last day a MLB team can sign one of their draft picks is this Friday August 15th by Midnight. Jordan Danks and the Chicago White Sox are at a standstill over bonus money. (Baseball Prospectus reported that he signed a contract which was posted on this very site. The report was erroneous.) Jordan wants 2nd round money and the White Sox are hesitant to give him 2nd round money. Alan Trubow of the Austin American Statesman has written an article this evening talking with the Danks about this very subject. Tags: Big 12, MLB Draft, Texas

Riley Boening Leads the Copperheads past the Pump JacksPosted by: Donald J. Boyles in Texas Collegiate LeagueIn the TCL contest last night pitting the Pump Jack of East Texas and the Copperheads of Coppell it was a pitcher duel between the Pump Jack Michael LaCourse and the Copperheads Riley Boening. LaCourse went a very strong 6 inning giving up 4 hits and striking out 7 while allowing 3 walks in a no decision before giving away Ed Hurta in the 7th. Ed takes the loss after giving up a lead off single to Marcellous Biggins, Hurta comes back to get Michael Pair to fly out to center field for the first out of the inning. This brings up Robert Barbosa, who lines one to right field for a one out double to bring in Biggins for the first run of the game. The 2nd out of the inning was recorded when Jaron Shepard flied out to left field. Then a critical error by Pat McCrory allows Bryan Johns to reach first base which allows Barbosa to score the 2nd run of the inning. Travis Sample grounds out to end the inning. The scholarship game: No more easy outs in college baseballPosted by: Donald J. Boyles in General CBB NewsFROM CBB NEWS SOURCE This story originally appeared in the Dallas Morning News and is being re-publish with the permission of the Author Brian Davis. For years, college baseball coaches have divvied up an NCAA-maximum 11.7 scholarships among 30 to 40 players. Learning how coaches manage those scholarships can be sobering for parents who believe their son is a future star. “As far as the numbers go, with 11.7 scholarships, it doesn’t go very far,” Texas coach Augie Garrido said. As one might expect, better recruits get more scholarship money. A coach may offer a top recruit thousands for tuition, room and board, a figure that could be 70 to 80 percent of a full scholarship. Our good friend Kendall Rogers continues to put out solid information about College Baseball. A couple of articles that caught my attention were around Northern Baseball programs and the lack of success. He discusses how the Northern schools are facing challenges both on the field and off the field around the budgets. The other article that he recently wrote is about the decline of several national powers over the last five years. I tend to agree with him with several of the schools. His final article is about how Texas has failed over the last three seasons. He also has a weekly mailbag with the latest edition linked below.
