Share The Citadel’s Fred Jordan picked up his 600th victory on Sunday in a 4-1 victory over the Air Force Falcons. Jordan is currently in his 18th season in charge of the Bulldog program and is the fastest coach in Southern Conference history to reach the 600 win plateau. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference baseball coaches and the voting members of the Southern Conference Sports Media Association have each selected Elon as the preseason favorite to repeat as champion in 2009. A year ago, the Phoenix became the first team in seven seasons to win both the regular season and tournament titles en route to a 44-18 season and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. Share Over the last few weeks, I have had to post two articles about a player and a coach picking up charges for Driving under the Influence of Alcohol. I thought that we should check in on a good story today. Brian Shubsda, a senior outfielder on The Citadel baseball squad signed his contract to join the US Marine Corps in October of 2009. Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel baseball head coach Fred Jordan announced Monday that the program has signed four future cadet-student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Two pitchers and two positions players have signed with the Bulldogs in the 2010 recruiting class.
Ben Carr (Atlanta, Ga./Stockbridge HS), Josh Pless (Spartanburg, S.C./Boiling Springs HS), Austin Pritcher (Charleston, S.C./James Island HS) and Jeff Spillane (Houston, Texas/Houston Christian HS) will join The Citadel baseball program in the fall of 2009. WACO, Texas – Baylor erased a two-run deficit with a four-run fifth, and Randall Linebaugh recorded a season-high seven strikeouts as the Bears defeated Texas State 7-2 in midweek action Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (29-20) improved to 20-10 at home this season; Baylor has recorded at least 20 home wins in each of Baylor Ballpark’s 10 seasons. NEWARK, DE – Thirteen Blue Hens recorded at least one hit and five cracked home runs as the University of Delaware baseball team stormed past Temple, 22-4, at Bob Hannah Stadium on a warm Wednesday afternoon.
Scott Shockley and Pat Dameron (at right) both had three hits and a home run, while Jared Olson, Bill Merkler, and Josh Dean each chipped in with two hits and a long ball. Ryan Cuneo also extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a sixth-inning double. Read the rest of this entry »

Ga Southern 6 The Citadel 5
STATESBORO, Ga. – With the bases loaded and one out in the ninth Jeremiah Parker (Carrollton/Carrollton) hit a grounder down the third base line. Ty Wright (Montrose/West Laurens) slid and beat Matt Arnold’s throw home as Georgia Southern pulled out a 6-5 Southern Conference win over The Citadel. The Eagles (28-19 overall, 12-9 SoCon) took 2-of-3 from the Bulldogs over the weekend.
Wright was hit by a Matt Reifsnider (4-4) pitch to start the ninth. Phillip Porter (Marietta/Sprayberry) sacrificed Wright to second then Chris Shehan (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) was intentionally walked. Matt Crim, the Friday night starter, walked Griffin Benedict (Dunwoody/St. Pius) to load the bases. Parker hit a soft grounder down the third base line. Bethune-Cookman 10 South Florida 3
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida baseball team lost, 10-3, to Bethune-Cookman Wednesday night at Red McEwen Field.
The Bulls drop to 25-21 overall while the Wildcats improve to 30-17.
Junior Chris Rey was 3-for-4 in the game with one RBI and a run scored, while junior Addison Maruszak added a two-hit outing to the Bulls’ offense.
Freshman Zach Pietrzyk made his longest start, and appearance, of his rookie campaign against the Wildcats, striking out two in his 4.1-inning outing. He allowed five runs from seven hits to take his second loss of the year. Read the rest of this entry »

FORT WORTH, Texas – For the second straight contest, the TCU Horned Frogs found themselves trailing heading into the ninth inning only to rally to tie the game. This time the Frogs needed three runs to tie the game at four, but Oklahoma broke the tie in the 12th inning to take a 5-4 victory Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium. Columbia, S.C. – Freshman right-handed pitcher Sam Dyson struck out eight batters in a career-high seven innings and Reese Havens hit his seventh home run of the year as South Carolina defeated College of Charleston 5-3 on Wednesday evening at Sarge Frye Field. The Gamecocks improve to 16-6 on the year while the loss drops College of Charleston to 16-8.
