MANSFIELD Conn. – Bases loaded. Two outs.

Trinity’s Jeremiah Bayer, the New England Pitcher of the Year, stared in at the plate. Looking back was Eastern senior Shawn Gilblair, the New England hitter of the year, up in the top of the ninth with his team trailing by one.

But in a matchup of the best players of the two top teams in the Division 3 New England regional, it was Bayer who won out, getting Gilblair to loft a short popup to shortstop to end the game and send the Bantams to the World Series in Grand Chute Wis. where they will look to defend their 2008 title. MANSFIELD Conn. – The defending champs are sitting pretty.

Trinity, who posted a 45-1 mark and brought home the Division III National Championship last season, moved to 3-0 in New England Regional play with a convincing 14-0 win over WPI last night.

The College Baseball Blog sent writer Nate Owen to cover the Division 3 Regional in Mansfield Connecticut on Friday. The first game of the day featured Trinity (CT) taking on Southern Maine in a winner’s bracket game. Trinity was able to walk away with a 6-0 victory. The second game of the day saw Husson defeat Babson by a score of 10-6 to eliminate Babson. The third game of the day was between Eastern Connecticut and Southern Maine which was won by Eastern Connecticut by a score of 7-2 to end Southern Maine’s season. MANSFIELD Conn. – In matchup between two conference pitchers of the year, runs figured to be tough to come by.

Trinity senior Jeremiah Bayer, the NESAC Pitcher of the Year, and Southern Maine senior Tim Therrian (9-1), the Little East Pitcher of the Year, locked in a scoreless dual until the fifth, when the third seeded Bantams scored the first of their six runs on the game, which would be all would need to move to 2-0 in New England Regional of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The College Baseball Blog was in attendance on May 13th for the first day of action in the 2009 Division 3 New England Regional in Mansfield Connecticut. The first game of the day featured WPI taking on Suffolk College which was won by WPI by a score of 7-6. The game was WPI’s first in the NCAA Tournament in the 106 year history of their program. The second game of the day featured Babson taking on the host school of Eastern Connecticut State. Babson used a big seven run second inning to grab a 9-0 lead and hold on for a 10-6 victory. The third game of the day saw Trinity (CT) take on Westfield State. The Bantams were able to get a James Wood homer which gave them the lead for good as they picked up the 6-4 victory. The final game of the night saw Southern Maine take on Husson. Southern Maine was able to pick up a 5-4 ten inning victory on a Mike Eaton single to right field. Read the rest of this entry »

MINNEAPOLIS – The D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 poll was released on March 17 and Salisbury University fell from the top spot to No. 2 after being the nation’s top-ranked team for three weeks. The Sea Gulls (14-2, 5-2 Capital Athletic Conference) received seven first-place votes and 589 points this week.

MINNEAPOLIS – The D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top 25 poll was released on March 10 and Salisbury University remains in the top spot for a third straight week.

Salisbury (14-1, 5-1 Capital Athletic Conference) received 19 first-place votes out of 25 and received 614 points. The Gulls have been ranked No. 1 since the week one poll that came out on February 24.

Baseball America has put together previews of Division 2 and Division 3. They have Tampa as the best team in the country for Division 2. The Spartans are seeking their third title in the last four years. UC San Diego is listed as the second best team while Mount Olive who was the 2008 Division 2 champion are ranked third by Baseball America. Central Missouri and Florida Southern round out the Top 5. Baseball America has put Robbie Shields of Florida Southern as the top position player while Mike Adams of Franklin Pierce is the top pitcher. Read the rest of this entry »

Cortland's 10th-year head coach Joe Brown leads all active NCAA Division III baseball coaches with a .789 career winning percentage

The SUNY Cortland baseball team is ranked first nationally in Division III for the 2009 season in two preseason polls – one conducted by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the other by the Web site D3baseball.com.

Cortland finished 42-5 last season, including a school-record 38-game winning streak. The Red Dragons made their ninth NCAA Division III World Series appearance, all since 1995, and finished tied for seventh nationally. Cortland’s string of 16 consecutive NCAA Division III tournament berths is the longest active streak nationally.
