Troy2010 The Troy University Trojans baseball team will be spending much of the spring at the friendly confines of Riddle-Pace Field.

The Trojans are scheduled to play 31 games at their home park in 2010 and will not go more than a week at any point during the season without a home game.

That schedule should prove beneficial to a squad that returns 19 players from a 2009 team that finished with a 33-23 record.

NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference recognized its top performers on the baseball field with the announcement of the 2009 All-Conference teams on Tuesday. The student-athletes selected to the first and second teams, as voted on by the 11 head coaches, were honored for their consistent play throughout the season, posting impressive numbers all year.

Weekend Winners:  Middle Tennessee State was the big weekend winner, as they swept a three game home series with Missouri State.  Also posting impressive weekends were UALR, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Louisiana-Monroe, New Orleans, Troy, and Western Kentucky.  UALR took two of three games at home against Northern Iowa, and just missed a sweep with a one run loss on Saturday.  Florida Atlantic finished the weekend with a 2-1 series record against Fordham.  Florida International posted a 20 run Saturday in route to a two games to one series victory over Jacksonville.  Louisiana-Monroe hosted the ULM  and ended the weekend with a 2-1 record.  New Orleans won the first three games of their home series against Towson before losing the Sunday finale to open the season 3-1.  Troy lost a Friday contest against Kentucky in the Caravelle Resort Invitational before winning their next three games to end the tournament at a very solid 3-1.   Western Kentucky took a single game from Toledo on Friday night, but the Saturday and Sunday meetings were canceled due to inclement weather. NEW ORLEANS – After winning its second tournament title and making its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in five seasons, along with the majority of its line-up returning, Western Kentucky University is expected to top the Sun Belt Conference in 2009, according to a vote by the league’s 11 head coaches. The Hilltoppers veteran ace Matt Ridings has been tabbed Preseason Pitcher of the Year, while ULM’s shortstop Ben Soignier has been selected as the Preseason Player of the Year. Laird powers USA Baseball past Northwest Florida State 16-2

MOBILE, Ala. – Sean Laird homered twice and drove in five runs as South Alabama cruised to a 16-2 victory over Northwest Florida State Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field.

Northwest Florida State took an early lead a pair of runs off Jags’ starter Miles Ethridge, but USA answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Ryan Bohanan got the Jags started with a triple, and Derek O’Reilly brought him in with a sacrifice fly. Laird put two more runs on the board with a homer to left field. Sophomore Sheldon McDonald threw eight shutout innings of five-hit, nine-strikeout ball and did not walk a batter, as he led the Huskies to a 5-0 win over the Western Michigan Broncos on Wednesday afternoon at IMG Academies in BRadenton, Fla. Florida Gulf Coast 5 South Florida 4

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida baseball team fell, 5-4, Tuesday night to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at Red McEwen Field.

The Bulls’ record drops to 3-4, while the Eagles improve to 8-1.

USF’s offensive attack came in the first two innings after falling behind by two after the top of the first. Redshirt freshman Ryan Lockwood spearheaded the Bulls’ offensive charge with a lead-off walk. Junior counterparts Brandon Smith and Addison Maruszak followed with a walk and a hit by pitch to fill the bases. Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State (6-0) remained undefeated on the season with a 4-3 victory over Auburn (4-3) in front of a crowd of 6,544, the fourth largest crowd to witness a game at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles got seven shutout innings from senior Ryan Strauss and three solo home runs on Saturday afternoon to win their third straight game over the Tigers this season.
