Mark Kingston of Tulane University will be leaving the school to head to Illinois State to become the head coach in the 2010 season. He will serve as the head coach designee in 2009 under outgoing coach Jim Brownlee. Kingston was a member of Rick Jones staff since the 2001 season and becomes the fifth head coach that served under Jones to become a head coach. Read the rest of this entry »

Durham, N.C. - USA Baseball announced today the naming of Tulane’s Rick Jones as head coach of the 2009 USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate).

Jones is the head coach at Tulane University in New Orleans, La., and he is coming off a 2008 campaign that was his 15th at the helm of the Green Wave baseball program. Over his career at Tulane, Jones has tallied a 639-306-2 record (.674), including a 257-127-2 mark in Conference USA play, which is more wins than any other league school. Inheriting a team that had been to the NCAA Regionals seven times in its previous 101 years of existence, Jones took the Green Wave to the postseason in his first season, again in 1996 and every year from 1998-2007. Tallahassee, Fla. - No. 4 national seed Florida State (52-11) bounced back from an opening day shutout to win four straight games and advance to the eighth NCAA Super Regional in school history with a 16-7 win over Tulane Monday night at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. FSU 24 Bucknell 9

Tallahassee, Fla. - Second-ranked Florida State (50-11) stayed alive in the NCAA Tournament with a 24-9 victory over Bucknell (30-24-2) Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles advanced to the regional finals against Tulane and must now defeat the Green Wave twice with game one being held later this evening at 7 pm. The Seminoles became the first team in the nation to reach the 50-win plateau.

With the win, the Seminoles braved off elimination for the second straight game moving to 42-23 in possible elimination games in regional action of the NCAA Tournament. Read the rest of this entry »

FSU 17 Florida 11

Tallahassee, Fla. - Second-ranked Florida State (49-11) thwarted elimination on Saturday afternoon downing intra-state rival Florida (34-24) 17-11 in game three of the Tallahassee Regional. The Seminoles registered a season-high 25 hits as every batter in the starting line-up recorded a hit, while eight of the nine batters collected multiple hits. Bucknell 7 FSU 0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — In the biggest win in Bucknell baseball history, senior Mathew Wilson pitched a complete-game, six-hit shutout against hard-hitting Florida State, and the Bison pulled off a 7-0 upset on opening night of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at Dick Howser Stadium.

Dane Grandizio went 4-for-5 to lead the offense, and the Bison scored three times in the second inning, another in the third and three more in the fourth. Wilson took it from there, eclipsing the school record with his fifth career shutout. Read the rest of this entry »

The Florida State Seminoles will host a Regional this year with rival Florida, Tulane, and Bucknell. The Seminoles have a 48-10 record while going 24-6 in the ACC which was good enough to win the Atlantic Division. The Gators of Florida will take their 34-22 record and a SEC record of 17-13 up the road to Tallahassee. The Green Wave of Tulane will come over from New Orleans to get back in the NCAA Tournament after a one year absence. They have a 37-20 record while going 13-9 in Conference USA. The last team in the Regional is Bucknell out of the Patriot League where they have a 29-22 overall mark and a conference record of 10-10. Read the rest of this entry »

Going into this weekend the marquee matchup in Conference USA was Houston at Southern Miss as both teams positioned themselves for seeding at the C-USA Tournament and NCAA berths. However, the home-standing Golden Eagles won all three matchups, including a pair of one-run games to move ahead of the Cougars in the league standings. Tulane won two games at Memphis, with the third game being rained out. UCF surprised Rice on Friday night and played them tough the next two days, but the Owls took back-to-back one-run victories. For the second straight week, the Conference USA Hitter of the Week award will be shared by two players. Rice junior C Adam Zornes and Tulane freshman 3B Rob Segedin split this week’s honor after strong performances at the plate last week. Rice has continued to distance itself from the rest of the pack in Conference USA. The No. 7 Owls swept a three-game series from No. 24 East Carolina to improve to 13-2 in league play. With second place Houston dropping two-of-three at UAB, Rice now owns a 3.5 game lead in the conference standings. Southern Miss and Tulane renewed their long-standing rivalry and the home standing Green Wave took two of three on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Houston sits atop the Conference USA baseball standings after sweeping a three-game series from No. 25 UCF at Cougar Field. UH is just ahead of Rice, which swept a three-game series at Memphis. East Carolina won two-of-three at Southern Miss, while Marshall and Tulane each won one game before tying on Sunday.

Houston’s first league sweep since 2006 was aided by second baseman Ryan Lormand, who went 7-for-12 in the series. Saturday’s middle game saw a strong pitching performance by Ty Stuckey. Read the rest of this entry »

It was quite a week for the East Carolina Pirates. After opening a five-game schedule with a wild 20-13 win at Old Dominion, ECU picked up a road win at Virginia Commonwealth and then returned home for the annual Keith LeClair Classic. Bad weather forced Friday’s games to be cancelled, setting up a Saturday doubleheader. The Pirates responded, defeating Pittsburgh in the first game and then knocking off No. 15 Michigan, 6-5, in the second game. On Sunday, ECU downed an always-tough Georgia Southern team, 9-3, to capture the tournament title. Brandon Henderson batted .556 (5-for-9) in the tournament, while Ryan Wood extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Read the rest of this entry »
