It’s that time of year again.  Some of the nation’s best teams flock to Minute Maid Park for the annual Houston College Classic.  This year the loaded field consists of UC Irvine, UCLA, Baylor, Texas A&M, Rice, and Houston.  With five of the six teams ranked in the top 10 of various polls, this has all the makings of a true “classic.”  The College Baseball Blog will be attending some of the games this weekend and have reports on the daily happenings.

Game #3: LBSU 5 – USC 4

LOS ANGELES – Derek Legg scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth Sunday while Charlie Ruiz threw 1 2/3 perfect innings in relief as the Long Beach State 49ers beat the USC Trojans, 5-4, at Dedeaux Field. SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore first baseman J.J. Thompson’s double to the gap in right-center field knocked in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as Cal Poly completed a comeback from a 6-2 deficit and upset No. 3 Rice 7-6 Saturday night in Baggett Stadium.

Coach Larry Lee’s Mustangs (2-1) also won the first game of Saturday’s day-night doubleheader, 10-3, and captured the season-opening non-conference baseball series, two games to one. Read the rest of this entry »

ULM Baseball Opens Practice

MONROE, La.—The defending Sun Belt Conference Champion ULM baseball team opened up practice for the 2009 season on Sunday afternoon. Preseason camp will continue until the Warhawks open the season on Feb. 20 against Northwestern State.

The Warhawks spent the first day of practice working on fielding drills before the pitchers and hitters squared off against each other for the first time since the fall.

College Baseball coaches from San Diego to Santa Barbara, including Northridge Head Coach Steve Rousey, convened at the ESPN Zone in Anaheim Saturday morning to show off their skills and creativity.

Their tools of choice however were not a glove, a baseball, or a bat but a skillet, a spatula, and a number of ingredients at their disposal as participants in the inaugural Baseball Cooking Challenge.

Receiving 78 points and seven first-place votes, Cal State Fullerton was tabbed as the favorite to win the 2009 Big West Conference crown, according to the Big West Conference preseason poll conducted by the league’s nine head coaches. The Titans have claimed at least a share of seven of the last 10 league titles and a conference-best 14 overall. UC Irvine was selected to finish second with 67 points and UC Santa Barbara was picked third after receiving 65 points and one first-place nod.

Rivals.com College Baseball Editor Kendall Rogers put out a great article previewing the Top 10 Seniors for the 2009 season. He names your typical players like Michael Rockett of Texas-San Antonio and Preston Guilmet of Arizona. He also brings up Nate Lape of Marshall who flies under the radar as he plays for the West Virginia based school. The biggest name on his list is Ole Miss’ pitcher Scott Bittle who appeared in 27 games with a ERA of 1.78. He held opponents to a .145 batting average against. The rest of the list includes: Luke Anders of Texas A&M, Cory Harrilchak of Elon, Chris Fetter of Michigan, Chris Rusin of Kentucky, Ben Orloff of UC Irvine and Ben Soignier of Louisiana-Monroe. The UC Irvine Baseball program will host its annual Alumni Weekend Feb. 5-7, 2009.

Kicking off the weekend will be the third annual Grip `Em & Rip `Em Golf Tournament, held at the Coyote Hills Golf Course in Fullerton, Calif. The golf tournament, held Thursday, Feb. 5, is a scramble format with baseball-themed, on-course contests and the first-ever helicopter ball drop. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 11:30 am followed by dinner and silent auction at the conclusion of play. The Grip `Em & Rip `Em Golf Tournament is the single largest fundraiser for the UC Irvine Baseball program each year.

The CBB continues our countdown to the 2009 College Baseball season with our Top 50 players to watch. We will be providing one player each day (Monday-Saturday) until we reach number 1.

We continue our list with junior closer Eric Pettis from UC-Irvine. The West Hills, California native had an outstanding high school career at El Camino Real. He ended up being named the All-West Valley League Co-MVP while picking up All-City and All-League honors in two seasons. He led his team in his junior season to the 2005 CIF State Championship. South Carolina Baseball Announces 2008 Signing Class

The University of South Carolina baseball program has announced the signing of 12 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the November early signing period. The class includes five players from the South Carolina Diamond Devils AAU squad that won a pair of national championships this summer as well as the top rated high school players out of the states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia. It consists of 10 high school players as well as two junior college standouts.
