Title on the Line in Regular Season Finale
LONG BEACH– Long Beach State’s Bryan Shaw picked up his eighth save, getting the final two outs in the ninth after Jonathan Jones’ two-run double completed a three-run eighth, forcing a Sunday finale for the Big West Championship, following a 8-6 win over No. 6-ranked CS Fullerton (37-18, 16-7 Big West).

LBSU (36-19, 15-8 Big West) sits one game back in the standings, but the winner of Sunday’s game at 1 p.m. will receive the automatic berth in next week’s NCAA Regional. A Fullerton win gives them the title outright, a win by the Dirtbags sets up a co-championship following a back-and-forth game that saw the Titans lead three times.

Shaw’s final two outs were anything but easy, as he got Jared Clark to strikeout with runners on the corners, before Brian Wilson grounded out to even the series. Clark had driven two runs last night and his solo home run in the seventh had given the Titans a 6-5 lead.

Aggies Take No. 9 UC Irvine In Series Opener
DAVIS, Calif. - Right-handed pitcher Eddie Gamboa did not allow an earned run and struck out a game-high four batters, and senior first baseman Evan Hudson drove home the eventual game-winning run with a two-run single in the eighth inning to lift UC Davis to a 3-1 victory over No. 9 UC Irvine in the series-opening Big West Conference baseball game at Dobbins Stadium Friday afternoon.

With the temperature soaring to over 100 degrees, UC Davis broke a 1-1 tie off Hudson’s RBI’s to improve to 32-19 overall and 11-8 in conference play. The Anteaters drop to 34-15 and 10-9 against conference opponents.

“We knew we’d be in for a fight with (Scott) Gorgen in there,” said Aggie head coach Rex Peters. “You just hope the game is close late and you can get him out of there, and we did that today. Eddie (Gamboa) matched him pitch for pitch. This is a huge win. It helps us tremendously.”

Gamboa pitched 7.1 innings and did not allow an earned run while scattering seven hits and striking out four batters in the no decision. The only UC Irvine run came off a fielding error on the Aggie shortstop in the third inning.

Gorgen, one of the top pitchers in the Big West this season, gave up only one run off three hits through the first 6.2 innings before giving way to the bullpen. The single run was a sacrifice fly from Kyle Mihaylo in the sixth inning.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Cal State Northridge (21-25) rode a wave of offense to its 21st victory Wednesday, notching three consecutive doubles in the fourth and cruising to a 4-2 victory over UNLV (20-24). The Northridge pitching effort returned to form behind a strong start from Drew Muren, who tossed five shutout frames before handing off to Davin Tate and the rest of the bullpen.

Muren wrapped us his first career shutout appearance in the fifth by facing just four batters and also posted two perfect innings. The freshman right-hander only got into any real trouble in the second, when Jesse Wight smacked a leadoff double for the Rebels. Muren, however, promptly picked him off and struck out the second man of the inning. Muren then surrendered a single and a walk before getting a fly out to finish the inning. NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge (20-24, 6-12) dispatched UC Irvine (30-12, 8-7) 4-1 Sunday, ending a seven-game slide to the ‘Eaters that started in 2006. Northridge avoided the sweep and claimed its 20th win, giving the program its first 20-win season since 2006 and its second since winning the Big West title in 2002.

Ryan Juarez made his third outstanding start in a row on the day and continued what has been the Matadors’ best weekend for starting pitching. Juarez wiggled out of trouble in the first after two walks and an error in the field and settled down considerably after that, handling the ‘Eaters easily in the second and third. A leadoff double bit him in the fourth as Francis Larson came around to score on a balk and a ground out, but Juarez retired the side in order in the fifth and came out unscathed in the sixth and seventh.
