CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Ben Bunting went 3-for-5 with three RBI and tied a school record with two triples, and No. 4 North Carolina got eight strong innings from its bullpen in a 20-4 win over Winthrop Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— Last year’s regular season champion, Binghamton University, barely edged out the defending tournament champion, Stony Brook University, to claim the top spot in the 2009 America East Baseball Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Bearcats received four of a possible six votes and garnered 34 points, while the Seawolves claimed the remaining three votes and finished with 33 points. BALTIMORE-To mark the 42nd season of UMBC baseball and practice starting next week, head coach John Jancuska announced that seniors Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.), Ryan Morse (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) and Dave Warrenfeltz (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) have been named captains for the 2009 squad. Share The Navy Midshipmen Examiner writer Tom Flynn has an excellent article previewing college baseball in the state of Maryland. He has the Maryland Terrapins as the top program in the state. The Terps usually struggle against the highly competitive teams in the conference but have the best team. He has CAA runner up Towson in the second spot after they went 30-28. The Navy Midshipmen come in at the third spot after another 30 win campaign and an appearance in the Patriot League Championship series. Share Head coach John Jancuska and the Retrievers will play three NCAA Tournament participants in 2009.

BALTIMORE—UMBC baseball head coach John Jancuska recently announced the Retrievers’ 2009 schedule, which will feature teams from 11 conferences outside of the America East and one independent.
For the second year in a row, the team will travel to Florida for Spring Training from Mar. 14-20. During the course of the week, the Retrievers will play teams from power conferences, such as Ohio State from the Big 10 and Pittsburgh from the Big East. The highlight of the week is facing 2008 NCAA College World Series participant Miami from the ACC on Mar. 18.

Tallahassee, Fla. – Second-ranked Florida State (32-3) captured its first regular season series victory over intra-state rival and No. 24 Florida (24-13) since 2005 with a 4-2 win Tuesday night. A new Dick Howser Stadium crowd of 6,737 were on hand to see senior Ryan Strauss pick up his second straight win over the Gators this year while throwing his first career complete game.
“Florida State, Florida is enough said,” added head coach Mike Martin on taking the season series from the Gators. “Florida has a great ball club and we were very fortunate to win. We executed very well offensively and you have to give Florida credit. They kept the ball game close throughout by making some very good pitching decisions.” Read the rest of this entry »

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman catcher Yasmani Grandal drove in the game-winning run after junior Dave DiNatale hit a two-run game-tying single in the bottom of the eighth as No. 2 Miami rallied to defeat Bethune-Cookman, 7-6, Wednesday night at Mark Light Field. Share The CBB continues our series of previews of different conferences throughout the nation. This week we check in on the America East conference which had Binghamton win the Regular Season title and Albany won the conference tournament in a classic 1-0 pitching duel. Albany was put into the Arkansas regional where they lost to Arkansas 9-0 and Creighton 21-11. The conference tournament will be double elimination at the number 1 seed’s home field. Share The Maryland Terrapins picked up a 11-6 victory over UMBC on Tuesday evening. Maryland used a six run third inning to cruise to the victory. Casey Baron got the win by working two innings and striking out five out of the six outs he recorded. Sean Rae got the loss for UMBC by giving up six runs in his two innings of work. Maryland will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Maryland Eastern-Shore while UMBC will host America East rival Binghamton on Friday for the start of a four game set.

Tim Kearney pitched a perfect scoreless inning in relief of Maryland starter Brett Curll to pick up his first career victory with a 9-0 shutout over UMBC. The Terps were led by Mike Murphy, Steve Braun, and Wink Nolan who each went 2-3 in the victory. UMBC’s leading hitter was Scott Peddicord who went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate. Maryland returns to action on Wednesday when they head to Towson for a non-conference match-up while UMBC is off until Friday when they host Hartford.
