#1 UNC 7 UNC-Wilmington 5
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Dustin Ackley and Mark Fleury connected on three-run home runs in the fifth inning for just about all the offense No. 1 North Carolina would need in a 7-5 win over UNC Wilmington Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. Down 4-0 before the pair of homers, the Tar Heels (32-10) rallied for their largest come-from-behind victory of the season and their ninth straight over the Seahawks (21-15). Share Georgia State (23-13, 6-3) at Northeastern (18-12, 5-4)
This is an important series for the Huskies. The Panthers are probably the best CAA team NU has faced up to this point. Winning the weekend would be a huge boost going forward for Northeastern. Freshman lefty Andrew Leenhouts (0-1, 1.04) shined on the big stage at Fenway Park during the Beanpot championship game Monday, striking out six in 3 and 2/3 innings. Dan Zehr has also been a key piece in a talented Husky ‘pen. The senior lefthander leads the team with 15 appearances and has a 2-1 record with a 2.16 ERA. Offensively, outfielder Frank Compagnone (.340-1-8) appears to be fully recovered from a knee injury which shelved him for the early going. The junior has slid up to the No. 2 spot in the order and has been red hot the past week.

North Carolina 3 East Carolina 1
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina right-hander Patrick Johnson carried a no-hitter into the seventh against hard-hitting East Carolina, and the No. 2 Tar Heels held off a late rally for a 3-1 win over the No. 14 Pirates Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. With the victory, Carolina (25-7) extended its current winning streak to nine over ECU (25-6).
Johnson (2-0) was masterful against the Pirates, who entered the night eighth nationally with a .361 team average. Over a career-best 6 1/3 innings, the Conover, N.C., native struck out a career-high 11, walked three and allowed just the one base hit in the seventh. He retired six of the final seven batters he faced via the strikeout and fanned two or more in four separate frames. Read the rest of this entry »
