ScottBoras The big story of the day is whether the Washington Nationals are going to sign San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg by the midnight deadline tonight.  He is not the only one as number 2 selection in UNC’s Dustin Ackley is still unsigned among others. Both of these players are represented by baseball power agent Scott Boras who has become one of the toughest negotiators in the industry over the last few years. This has ended up hurting some players in their negotiations for a contract as many players have slipped down the draft board.

OMAHA, Neb. – Left fielder Kole Calhoun went 2-for-3 with six RBI and Arizona State rolled to a 12-5 victory over North Carolina before a sellout crowd of 25,001 Thursday evening at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The Sun Devils, who are making their 21st College World Series appearance in school history, improve to 7-1 in the NCAA Tournament, 51-13 on the season and will meet top-seeded Texas on Friday at 6 p.m. CT. Read the rest of this entry »

Among the First Team honorees are six players participating in this year’s College World Series including Arizona State starting pitcher Mike Leake, LSU starting pitcher Louis Coleman, Arizona State catcher Carlos Ramirez, UNC first baseman Dustin Ackley, ASU outfielder Jason Kipnis and Virginia utility player Danny Hultzen. The opening game of Day 4 of the College World Series featured the North Carolina Tar Heels playing against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. The Tar Heels entered the game with a 47-17 record while Southern Miss was 40-25. Both teams entered the game with a record of 0-1 with North Carolina losing to Arizona State 5-2 while Southern Miss lost to Texas 7-6. The Golden Eagles sent JR Ballinger to the hill who was 6-3 on the year with a 3.89 ERA in 17 appearances (15 starts). UNC countered with senior RHP Adam Warren who entered the game with a record of 9-2 with an ERA of 3.23. Read the rest of this entry »

JoshSpenceASUAManThe Arizona State Sun Devils took on the North Carolina Tar Heels in the opening game of the second day of action at the College World Series. Arizona State enters the game with a 49-12 record while North Carolina has a 47-16 record. ASU sent LHP and Australian native Josh Spence to the hill as he sported a 9-1 record with a 2.33 ERA. Spence was selected in the third round (110 overall) by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. UNC countered with RHP Alex White who was 8-4 record and a 4.13 ERA. OMAHA, Neb. – North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley, Arizona State pitcher Mike Leake and San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg have been named as finalists for the 2009 Dick Howser Trophy in balloting by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and in conjunction with the College Baseball Foundation, the Dick Howser Trophy committee and the St Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.

The winner of the Howser Trophy will be announced in Lubbock, Texas, on July 2, during the inaugural College Baseball Awards Show, held at the United Spirit Arena and shown on MLB.com. The nationally broadcasted event will be followed by the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony on July 3 in Lubbock.

Alex White is a 6-3 200 pound right handed pitcher out of the University of North Carolina. He entered the season as the second or third best right handed college pitcher. He had an up and down season as he went 8-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 15 starts. He ended up striking out 109 batters in his 98 innings of work. Read the rest of this entry »
