The Fresno State Bulldogs kept their incredible run going knocking off the No. 2 national seed North Carolina 5-3 on Tuesday night at Rosenblatt Stadium. The Bulldogs are now 2-0 and are off until Friday and await the winner of the North Carolina/LSU elimination game in bracket two.

The Bulldogs got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning scoring a run to take a 1-0 lead. North Carolina came out in the top of the fourth inning and scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Fresno State answered with a home run by Steve Susdorf in the bottom of the inning to cut the Tar Heels’ lead to 3-2.

OMAHA, Neb. — North Carolina right-hander Alex White limited seventh-seeded LSU to four hits in seven innings and the second-seeded Tar Heels pounded out 17 hits to deal the Tigers an 8-4 loss in the 2008 NCAA College World Series opening round on Sunday night at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are making their third straight appearance in the College World Series making the Championship series the last two season where they lost to Oregon State in both years. The Tar Heels are led by 10th year head coach Mike Fox. The Tar Heels enter the College World Series with a 51-12 record after sweeping through the Cary (NC) Regional with victories over Mount St Mary’s (16-8) and knocked off UNC-Wilmington twice (5-1 and 7-3). The Tar Heels were then named the hosts of the Super Regional in Cary where they welcomed Coastal Carolina with two straight victories by scores of 9-4 and 14-4. Read the rest of this entry »

Lubbock, Texas - As eight teams load up and head to Omaha to continue the quest for the College Baseball National Championship, eight players are named as semi-finalists for the Brooks Wallace National Player of Year Award. College baseball has produced a fine class of young men to represent the “Wallace Watch” from the pre-season release to where it stands today.

2008 College World Series, Omaha, NECARY, N.C. - North Carolina took a 6-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning and never looked back as they dispatched Coastal Carolina by a final score of 14-4. UNC led Coastal Carolina 12-0 before Coastal Carolina was able to finally get on the board in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs. UNC will take on the winner of the UC-Irvine/LSU Super Regional.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Seminoles advanced to Omaha behind an 11-4 victory over Wichita State. After dropping the first game of the series 10-7, Florida State bounced back to take games two and three and advance to their 19th College World Series but first CWS appearance since 2000. Florida State will take on Stanford in the opening game.

UNC 9 Coastal Carolina 4

CARY, N.C. (AP) - Alex White threw seven strong innings and Seth Williams homered to lead North Carolina past mistake-prone Coastal Carolina 9-4 on Saturday in Game 1 of the best-of-three Cary Super Regional.

Williams, Kyle Seager and Kyle Shelton drove in two runs apiece for the Tar Heels (50-12), who turned the Chanticleers’ season-high six errors into six unearned runs and moved within one victory of their third straight trip to the College World Series.

White (10-3) was a major reason for that. He struck out six and allowed eight hits while topping out his fastball at 96 mph and hitting the mid-90s from his first inning through his last in his second straight strong performance in the NCAA tournament. Read the rest of this entry »

CARY, NC — The #2 national seed North Carolina Tar Heels (49-12, 22-7 ACC) host the Big South champion Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (50-12, 17-3 Big South) at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary. Both teams went 3-0 in their regionals last weekend with UNC defeating Mount St. Mary’s and UNC-Wilmington and Coastal Carolina defeating Columbia, Alabama and East Carolina. UNC-Wilmington 15 Elon 11

CARY, N.C. - Trailing 11-4 in the ninth, UNC Wilmington exploded for 11 runs as the Seahawks eliminated rival and third-seed Elon with a 15-11 win on Sunday at the NCAA Cary Regional at the USA Baseball Complex.

The Seahawks ran their record to 44-16-1 and reached the regional championship game for the third time in four NCAA tournament appearances. UNCW will face top-seeded UNC Chapel Hill at 520 p.m. The Phoenix, meanwhile, concluded their season with a 44-18 mark. Read the rest of this entry »

Elon 6 Mount St. Mary’s 3

CARY, N.C. - Ken Ferrer allowed just three runs over a career-best 7.2 innings pitched and Mike Melillo hit a two-run home run to lead the 29th-ranked and third-seeded Elon Phoenix to a 6-3 victory over the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers in an elimination game of the Cary Regional of the 2008 NCAA Baseball Tournament. The Phoenix upped its record to 44-17 while the Mountaineers ended their season at 21-34.

CARY, N.C. – Freshman Alex Hill went 4-for-4 and reached base five times while junior Brad Holt held Elon to six hits as UNC Wilmington topped Elon, 5-2, in the first game of the NCAA Cary Regional on Friday at the USA Baseball Complex.

The Seahawks (43-15-1), who advanced to the winner’s bracket game on Saturday at 5 p.m., picked up their school-record 43rd win and halted a brief 2-game losing skid. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Virginia earned its second-consecutive win over a top-5 team Friday, as the Cavaliers defeated No. 3 Florida State, 5-3, at the 2008 ACC Baseball Championship at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The win came two nights after Virginia upset No. 1 North Carolina, 8-7 in extra innings.
