The Gonzaga Bulldogs won the conference’s regular season and the subsequent post-season championship series to make the NCAA Tourney before bowing out after three games in the Fullerton regional.

BryceHarper Baseball America recently put out their Top 25 College Baseball and High School Prospects for the 2010 MLB Draft. The college rankings are led by Bryce Harper who has received national attention for skipping his final two years of high school to play college baseball with Community College of Southern Nevada. The rest of the top five is Anthony Ranaudo from LSU, Deck McGuire from Ga Tech, Levon Washington from Chipola JC, and Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast. The rest of the top 25 is available below.

SanDiegoBaseballPhot FULL 2010 SCHEDULE (PDF)

The Toreros’ schedule features yet another strong caliber of opponents, much like the 2009 season. San Diego will face 11 NCAA Tournament participants including the University of Oklahoma, Rice, Coastal Carolina, Gonzaga, Indiana, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, Arizona State, San Diego State, and Fresno State to highlight USD’s schedule. The Toreros will compete in 26 games against this top competition.

RichHill San Diego head coach Rich Hill has announced coaching changes with former top assistant coach Eric Valenzuela heading over to cross town rival San Diego State. The biggest change sees Jay Johnson moved up to the top assistant position while Tyler Kincaid has been hired from Palomar College to take over the pitching duties. Ramon Orozco has been moved up to volunteer assistant coach while Nik Crouch joins the staff as the Director of Baseball Operations. We should see how the move by Valenzuela affects the San Diego program as he was very important in bringing some star players into the program which is highlighted by Brian Matusz and Josh Romanski.

The Cape Cod Baseball League has put out their 2009 All-Cape League team. It is led by CCBL MVP Kyle Roller from East Carolina and CCBL Top Pitcher Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast. The infield features first baseman Mickey Wiswall (Boston College), second baseman Pierre LePage (Uconn), shortstop B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Miss) and third baseman Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia). The two ultility infielders are Zach Cox (Arkansas) and Nick Crawford (UAB). The outfield is led by Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State). The other four members of the All-League outfield are Gary Brown (CS-Fullerton), Austin Wates (Virginia Tech), Brian Fletcher (Auburn), and George Springer (UConn). The catchers are Mike Murray (Wake Forest) and Cody Stanley (UNC-Wilmington). Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) joins Roller as the All-League Designated Hitters.

KyleBlair The Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Month for July has been awarded to Kyle Blair (Sand Diego) of Brewster. Blair’s record remains flawless on the season, winning three and losing none. Over the past month, the 6-3 righty has appeared in four games, all of them starts, and recorded 27 innings pitched. Over those 27 innings, Blair has surrendered only 12 hits and three earned runs, good for a 1.00 ERA. He also sports a 1.40 strikeouts-per-innings-pitched ratio, with 38 strikeouts this month.

COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK:

Kyle Blair, Brewster RHP

Brewster’s Kyle Blair (San Diego) has earned this week’s Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week Award. In his only start of the week, the righty put on a commanding performance in a 10-2 victory over Bourne, giving up only two unearned runs in a nine inning complete game. Blair fanned 12 Braves over the course of the game, while scattering only 4 hits.

Blair is a sophomore at University of San Diego. He led the Toreros in earned run average in 2009, at 3.13, and also led the team with a .225 batting average against. Blair began to turn heads his freshman year, posting an 8-4 record and earning All-West Coast Conference Freshman Team honors. Read the rest of this entry »

hughesAccording to multiple sources, Virginia Tech’s Peter Hughes was offered the Washington Huskies job today but turned down the offer to stay with the Hokie program. Hughes just finished his third season with the Virginia Tech program where he went 32-21 in 2009. It was good enough for a 11th place finish in the ACC. Read the rest of this entry »

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore southpaw Matt Leonard pitched six strong innings and junior left fielder Luke Yoder drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth-inning single as Cal Poly completed a three-game series sweep against Sacramento State with a 6-2 victory in a non-conference baseball game Sunday afternoon before 1,427 in Baggett Stadium.

Coach Larry Lee’s Mustangs extended their winning streak to six games and improved to 6-1 on the year, their best start since going 7-1 to open the 2001 campaign. Sacramento State fell to 1-5.

New Mexico State's Leo Aguirre

Fresno State. Fresno State lost two of three against the Oregon Ducks in Eugene this weekend. In game one on Friday the Bulldogs lost a pitching duel 1-0 on Friday. Oregon’s Andrew Schmidt hit a walk-off single with two outs giving the Ducks the victory in front of a sold-out crowd of 2,777. Holden Sprague pitched 7.2 innings giving up just four hits and walking just one.

On Saturday Oregon’s bats pushed them to a 7-1 victory over Fresno State. The Ducks scored two runs in the bottom of the second, three in the bottom of the third and added single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh. Fresno State starter Sean Bonesteele lasted just 2.1 innings giving up five runs, all earned and allowed five hits. He also walked four batters.
