SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Coaches will always say defense wins championships. Perhaps that’s why the USC Upstate baseball team loaded up its Class of 2009 recruiting class with the first line of defense on the diamond, at the pitching mound, with the team signing five versatile pitchers, including two potential two-way players, an infielder and an outfielder, in their initial Fall period signing class, recruiting coordinator Russell Triplett announced on Thursday.

 Matt Fincher and the 2009 Spartans will play 30 games against teams that finished 2008 in the top 150 in the NCAA RPI.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The four-year seniors on this year’s USC Upstate baseball squad have already beaten 22 ranked opponents in their careers. The group of four players will no doubt get a few more chances to relish in the role of underdog this spring, as the 2009 USC Upstate baseball team will play a 56-game schedule that features bouts with 2008 NCAA Super Regional squad Coastal Carolina and NCAA Tournament squads Lipscomb, Charlotte and South Carolina, 12th-year head coach Matt Fincher announced on Thursday.
The Spartans will play 16 games against teams that posted 30-wins in 2009 and will take the field in 30 of their 56 games against teams that finished among the top 150 Division I teams in RPI, making the schedule one of the hardest in school history.

Fighting Illini Wrap Up Successful Summer
A number of Fighting Illini finished their summer seasons with great success in recent weeks, as Casey McMurray’s Santa Barbara Foresters won the National Baseball Congress World Series, Joe Bonadonna and Brandon Wikoff finished second in the Northwoods League playoffs with the Madison Mallards and Nick Stockwell led the Lombard Orioles to a second-place finish at the Stan Musial World Series. MACON, Ga. – Stetson is the overwhelming favorite to repeat as Atlantic Sun Conference baseball champion in 2008 in the league’s preseason poll. The Hatters garnered eight of 12 first place votes in the poll conducted among the conference’s head coaches. Hatter outfielder Justin Bass and Lipscomb catcher Caleb Joseph split preseason Player of the Year honors, while Lipscomb’s Rex Brothers claimed Pitcher of the Year honors.
