ShareThe Pac-10 was 7-0 in games played on Wednesday.
BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal scored twice in the third inning and then exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 9-6 victory over Santa Clara Wednesday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 13-8 overall and the Broncos dropped to 10-8. The winning pitcher for Cal was sophomore right-hander Yasser Clor, who improved his record to 3-0 by throwing a career-high 5.1 innings with six hits, four runs, one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Kevin Miller earned his first collegiate save by throwing the final 3.2 innings (five hits, two runs, one earned run, one walk, two strikeouts). Sophomore right fielder Mark Canha, who is leading the Bears with a .398 average, had a two-run single in the third, while senior third baseman Michael Brady, sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn, junior first baseman Blake Smith, junior second baseman Jeff Kobernus, freshman left fielder Danny Oh and junior catcher Dylan Tonneson all had RBI in the fourth inning. Share LOS ANGELES – Heated rivals Japan and Korea met Monday night at Dodger Stadium with the World Baseball Classic championship on the line.
But it wasn’t even the most important baseball game played in Los Angeles.

ShareCal Baseball Defeats Stanford, 7-6, to Open Pac-10 Play
BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of California baseball team – behind home runs from Brett Jackson and Dylan Tonneson, and stellar relief pitching from Michael Bugary and Blake Smith – defeated Bay Area rival Stanford, 7-6, Saturday in the Pac-10 opener at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved their record to 11-7 (1-0), while the Cardinal dropped to 3-9 (0-1). Cal also got strong hitting efforts from sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn (2-for-4, two RBI) and senior third baseman Michael Brady (2-for-3, two doubles, RBI). [READ MORE]
No. 4 ASU Takes Out Arizona 7-3
TEMPE, Ariz. – For the second consecutive night, a strong starting pitching performance led the No. 4 Arizona State University baseball team to victory over Arizona, as Josh Spence earned the win in a 7-3 victory on Saturday. Share LONG BEACH, Calif. – Even though the geographic region of Southern California is somewhat of college baseball’s mecca, with nationally ranked squads within a thirty minute drive of one another, I was pleasantly surprised to be sitting in traffic on the way to the Dirtbags home opener. It being February, and the support for both the Long Beach State and USC baseball squads this early in the season was quite surprising. Obviously, last years season of success for the Dirtbags is still carrying momentum into this season, which brought the biggest crowd in Long Beach State baseball history, what actually looked much bigger from within, a tally of 3, 342 fans at Blair Field. SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore first baseman J.J. Thompson’s double to the gap in right-center field knocked in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as Cal Poly completed a comeback from a 6-2 deficit and upset No. 3 Rice 7-6 Saturday night in Baggett Stadium.

With a combination of a favorable home schedule, one of the nation’s top players and the return of almost the entire pitching staff, the USC baseball team has every reason to be optimistic for the 2009 season. Share Arizona State picked to win Pac-10
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Arizona State has been chosen as the favorite to win this year’s Pac-10 baseball title, according to a vote of the league’s coaches.
The Sun Devils received three of 10 first-place votes, earning 69 points overall. UCLA also received three first-place votes and 67 total points for the No. 2 spot, while Stanford was picked third with one first-place vote, totaling 64 points. Rounding out the top five was Oregon State, which nabbed two first-place votes and 58 points overall, and Arizona grabbed the final first-place vote for a total 56 points.
