CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Lions jumped out to a big lead with seven runs in the first two innings, but it was the bullpen that came up big on Thursday for the Southeastern Louisiana baseball team (36-21, 22-13 Southland Conference) as the Lions held off a rally by the Northwestern State Demons (26-26, 18-15 SLC) to advance to day three of the 2009 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament with a 9-7 win on Wednesday morning.

CORPUS CHRISTI — Sophomore Tyler Carpenter’s two-out liner to right brought home junior Ryan Rummel, capping a two-run ninth-inning rally, and No. 3 seed UTSA opened the 22nd annual Southland Conference Tournament with a 5-4 victory against sixth-seeded Northwestern State on Wednesday morning at Whataburger Field.

The Bobcats claimed their third regular-season championship and their first outright title last weekend after finishing the regular season with a 38-14 overall record and 24-7 mark in conference play.

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Lamar hit three home runs and had eight extra-base hits to defeat McNeese State 13-5 at Cowboy Diamond on Sunday to become the third team to secure a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament.

Andy Mena was one of four players to finish with three hits, including his second home run of the season, drove in three and scored twice.
