Pitching Coach- Stan Phelps - UT-Tyler

Stan Phelps and Wes Davis, assistant coaches for The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team, were named the coaches of the year in their respective minor leagues following the completion of the 2008 season.

Phelps, who served as head coach of the East Texas Pump Jacks, earned the honor in the Texas Collegiate League, while Davis picked-up the nod in the Coastal Plain League for his work as head coach with the Florence RedWolves.

Sophomore outfielder Austin Newell and junior pitcher Lex Wolfe of The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team were both named to the Wolff Division All-Star team and will play in the 2008 Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League All-Star game on July 28. Patriots’ assistant coach Wes Davis will be making an all-star appearance as well, coaching the American team in the 2008 Coastal Plain League All-Star game on July 21.

Wolfe currently has a record of 1-2 for the Jersey Pilots with one save over 47.0 innings pitched. The right-hander from New Jersey has struck out 45 batters this summer and has allowed just 12 earned runs for an ERA of 2.30.

James N. Vilade has been appointed the new athletic director at The University of Texas at Tyler, Dr. Howard Patterson, UT Tyler vice president of student affairs announced.

Vilade, whose appointment is effective Aug. 18, succeeds Patterson who was the university’s first director of athletics. Patterson was appointed to a vice presidency in April 2008.

As athletic director, Vilade will direct 15 men’s and women’s programs. He will continue to serve as head baseball coach.

For college students, summer is usually reserved for going home and relaxing before retuning to the grind in the fall. For some member of the University of Texas at Tyler baseball team and coaching staff, the summer is a time to hone their baseball skills in preparation for the upcoming season.

This summer, seven members of the Patriots’ baseball team and three coaches are using their break to get better and improve on this past season’s 36-9 record and get ready for the 2009 season. In the summer of 2008, UT Tyler will have players and coaches on ten different teams in eight different leagues playing in locations such as Alaska, Kansas, New York, Texas, New Jersey, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and even Canada.

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – Junior Blake Booher (Hurst, Texas) was named West Region Pitcher of the Year by Rawlings and the American Baseball Coaches Association on Monday afternoon. Booher was just one of three Patriots named to the All-West Region First Team. Joining Booher was senior second baseman Clay Baker (Henderson, Texas) and junior pitcher Brett Holland (Lindale, Texas).

Booher, Baker and Holland are the first Patriots to be named to the First Team All-Region by the ABCA. All three UT Tyler players are now eligible to become All-Americans. The All-America teams will be revealed on May 23.

Game 3: #6 UT-Tyler 6, Mississippi College 3 (Choctaws eliminated)

ABILENE, Texas – Facing elimination, Texas-Tyler rebounded from a Friday loss to eliminate Mississippi College in a 6-3 win at Walt Driggers Field Saturday. UTT and MC both lost its respective opening games in the American Southwest Conference Championship Round Friday but the Patriots avoided elimination and will play the loser of the winner’s bracket game between Concordia-Texas and McMurry.

Game 4: McMurry 9, Concordia-Texas 7

ABILENE, Texas – Head coach Lee Driggers said after a Friday win that he didn’t think McMurry was in the driver’s seat. However, after a 9-7 win over Concordia-Texas in the winner’s bracket games Saturday, McMurry will enter championship Sunday as the only team without a loss in the American Southwest Conference Championship Round.

Game 5 (Semifinal): Concordia-Texas 7, UT-Tyler 3 (UT-Tyler eliminated)

ABILENE, Texas - For the second time in two days the Concordia-Texas Tornados knocked off the nationally-ranked UT-Tyler Patriots and moved on to the championship game Sunday. The Patriots took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, but CTX countered with two runs apiece in the second, third, and fourth innings and held on for a 7-3 win in the American Southwest Conference Championship Round.

ABILENE, Texas - Stephen Derrick and Weston Franco put a charge into McMurry’s offense with back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning and the home team went on to defeat Mississippi College 10-2 in its opening game of the American Southwest Conference Championship Round Friday at Walt Driggers Field.

Derrick poked a 3-run home run to opposite field for his 10th of the season and Franco followed with a towering solo shot to left field for his 10th of the year The four-run inning for McMurry followed Mississippi’s run in the top of the third when Will Reed led off with a solo homer. However, McMurry starter Clint Johnston kept the Choctaws at bay and McMurry came through offensively.

ABILENE, Texas - Concordia-Texas stunned No. 6-ranked Texas-Tyler in the opening game of the American Southwest Conference Championship Round Friday at Walt Driggers Field with an 8-7 victory. Brian Wernecke homered twice including a clutch 2-run shot in the top of the ninth inning that later proved to be the game-winner.

The 8th-ranked University of Texas at Tyler baseball team took care of Hardin-Simmons, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon at Irwin Field to win the best-of-three game series and advance to next weekend’s Championship Round of the 2008 American Southwest Conference tournament.

UT Tyler jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning with RBI singles from seniors Kyle Braden (Carrollton, Texas) and Corey Farra (Lewisville, Texas.)

In the bottom of the inning, the Cowboys’ Wayne Pimpton tripled to lead of the inning and would score two batters later to pull within one.

The 8th-ranked University of Texas at Tyler baseball team jumped out to 1-0 lead in their American Southwest Conference opening round playoff series by downing Hardin-Simmons, 13-5.

The Patriots started off hot when junior Kendall Fox (Carrollton, Texas) scored off of a single from junior Jeremy Harding (Houston, Texas) to give his team a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, junior Joe Towns (Carrollton, Texas) would score off of an error by Hardin-Simmons’ Kevin Ellison to give UT Tyler a 2-0 lead.

The Patriots would add another run in the bottom of the second to go up 3-0.

In the top of the fifth, the Cowboys got their offense started with a score by Wayne Pimpton off of a wild pitch from junior pitcher Blake Booher (Hurst, Texas). Hardin-Simmons would tie the game at three, with a two RBI triple by Ryan Stepp.

The 2008 ASC Baseball Championship Tournament pairings have been announced. Texas-Tyler, Mississippi College, McMurry and Concordia Texas will serve as hosts of the four best-of-three first-round series that begin on Friday (April 25). McMurry, Concordia Texas, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Hardin-Simmons all shared the ASC West Division title with 14-7 league marks, but McM is the No. 1 seed and CTX is the No. 2 seed due to the conference tie-breaker procedure. Tyler won the East outright to get the division’s top seed and MC landed the No. 2 spot due to having the tie-breaker edge over Ozarks, which also had a 13-5 league record. CLINTON, Miss. — The 6th-ranked University of Texas at Tyler baseball team captured its third American Southwest Conference Eastern Division championship in five years by sweeping a doubleheader with Mississippi College, 17-5 and 6-2, in Clinton on Saturday afternoon.
In the matinee, UT Tyler scored 17 runs off of 19 hits, with nine of the runs coming in the fourth inning. Junior Jared Hood and seniors Andrew Damewood and Kyle Braden each hit homeruns on the day. Hood finished the game by going 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBIs.

Seniors Andrew Damewood (Plano, Texas) and Kyle Braden (Carrollton, Texas) each hit two homeruns to combine for four of the University of Texas at Tyler’s five homeruns on the day, as the Patriots swept Louisiana College in a doubleheader, 6-5 and 13-0.

In the first game, Kyle Braden made his senior day a memorable one by hitting a walk-off solo homerun to lift the Patriots over the Wildcats, 6-5. Braden was 2-for-2 on the day with three runs and 2 RBIs.

The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team out hit Louisiana College, 10-5, on its way to a 7-3 win on Friday night at Irwin Field. UT Tyler has now won nine straight games and 10 of its last 12.

The Patriots got things going early when senior Chris Goss (Waco, Texas) scored junior Jared Hood (Marshall, Texas) to give UT Tyler an early 1-0 lead.
