The last time Kenn Kasparek AKA Big Bird, pitch for Texas was back in June ‘06. For the last year and Half he has been rehabbing his pitching arm since the Tommy John surgery in ‘06. Kenn went 5 innings gave up two hits, two walks and had 5 strikeouts. He threw 67 pitches for his first outing in over a year and a half. Kenn looks healthy and ready to be the main pitcher for this staff that is deep and talented but very young. Kenn is a red-shirt Junior so he will be able to provide leadership to the younger members of the staff. After Kenn threw his 5 in came Riley Boening in for the 6th and the 7th. Riley also miss all of 2007 due to shoulder surgery. He is not as far along a Kenn but, made it be known that he is also ready to eat up some innings this year. In his two innings of work he threw 40 pitches and gave up a run. In the 8th Freshman Stayton Thomas came in to strike out the side in 12 pitches. Marcus Tackett came in the 9th to close the door and sent the Rams packing. This was a great start for the Pitching staff this year as last year they did not have the arms.

I did not make it out to the Disch today to watch the game between VCU and Texas. I was able to follow it on the radio and Texas made VCU paid for the 5 errors they committed. Freshman Cole Green got his first career start as a Longhorn against VCU Senior Cody Eppley. Cole did a great job of keeping the VCU Rams of balance for 4 innings and Keith Shinaberry came in the 5th and the 6th and gave up 3 of the 4runs that VCU scored. Chance Ruffin another Freshman closed out the 7th, 8th and 9th to get the save. Michael Toress had 5 rbis on the Day and Freshman Kevin Keyes continues his hot hitting as he went 2-3 and Sophomore Brandon Belt finally got it going with a 4-5 day at the plate.
Texas will be looking to close out the series with Kenn Kasparek on the mound. Kenn will be making his first appearance for Texas since he has been sideline since the Summer of ‘06.

The atmosphere at Disch Falk Field was unbelievable today. The weather was picture perfect and on top of that it was opening day of College baseball. Austin Woods went 6 inning giving up 5 hits and allowing 2 runs to score. He was perfect through 4 and 2/3 before VCU finally found their bats. VCU ’s team defense looked like a team that has not done a lot of outdoor practice time. Their CF misplayed a ball and the LF lost two balls in the sky. Jordan Danks reached base twice via base on balls and scored twice. Kyle Russell walked once and reach base due to the error on the CF and scored two runs. Preston Clark had two hits and had 4 rbis on the day. Preston will enjoy hitting behind Jordan and Kyle as pitchers will not give anything to them to hit.

The Longhorns open the season Friday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field against Virginia Commonwealth. One of the biggest concerns for Texas this year is pitching. The Longhorns will need to find more depth with the condensed schedule and will have to rely on youth to develop.
