BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech baseball team will conclude its fall practice schedule this weekend by holding the annual Hokie Fall World Series, a three-game, intrasquad affair that will take place at English Field.
The two teams will face off three times from Oct. 15-18. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, with Friday being a designated off day. Saturday’s game will also begin at 5:30 p.m, while Sunday’s game will begin at 4 p.m.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech released its 2010 baseball schedule on Wednesday, and 22 games against 2009 NCAA Tournament participants, including 19 against top-25 teams, highlight the 56-game slate. There will be 31 games played at the Hokies’ English Field, including a 13-game homestand in early March.

Share Baseball America recently put out their Top 25 College Baseball and High School Prospects for the 2010 MLB Draft. The college rankings are led by Bryce Harper who has received national attention for skipping his final two years of high school to play college baseball with Community College of Southern Nevada. The rest of the top five is Anthony Ranaudo from LSU, Deck McGuire from Ga Tech, Levon Washington from Chipola JC, and Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast. The rest of the top 25 is available below.

Share The Cape Cod Baseball League has put out their 2009 All-Cape League team. It is led by CCBL MVP Kyle Roller from East Carolina and CCBL Top Pitcher Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast. The infield features first baseman Mickey Wiswall (Boston College), second baseman Pierre LePage (Uconn), shortstop B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Miss) and third baseman Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia). The two ultility infielders are Zach Cox (Arkansas) and Nick Crawford (UAB). The outfield is led by Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State). The other four members of the All-League outfield are Gary Brown (CS-Fullerton), Austin Wates (Virginia Tech), Brian Fletcher (Auburn), and George Springer (UConn). The catchers are Mike Murray (Wake Forest) and Cody Stanley (UNC-Wilmington). Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) joins Roller as the All-League Designated Hitters.

The first article looks at Virginia Tech’s Austin Wates who has stood out this summer with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Wates has showcased his in the Cape putting up huge numbers including a batting average over .300 against some of the best pitchers in the country. He also has excellent speed which is seen in his 6.5 second time in the 60.

According to multiple sources, Virginia Tech’s Peter Hughes was offered the Washington Huskies job today but turned down the offer to stay with the Hokie program. Hughes just finished his third season with the Virginia Tech program where he went 32-21 in 2009. It was good enough for a 11th place finish in the ACC. Read the rest of this entry »
