CHARLOTTESVILLE — Fall practice starts in about two weeks for the UVa baseball team. Before fall ball ends, the sounds of construction may make it difficult at times for players and coaches to concentrate at Davenport Field.
They won’t mind at all.

Share The Cape Cod Baseball League has put out their 2009 All-Cape League team. It is led by CCBL MVP Kyle Roller from East Carolina and CCBL Top Pitcher Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast. The infield features first baseman Mickey Wiswall (Boston College), second baseman Pierre LePage (Uconn), shortstop B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Miss) and third baseman Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia). The two ultility infielders are Zach Cox (Arkansas) and Nick Crawford (UAB). The outfield is led by Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State). The other four members of the All-League outfield are Gary Brown (CS-Fullerton), Austin Wates (Virginia Tech), Brian Fletcher (Auburn), and George Springer (UConn). The catchers are Mike Murray (Wake Forest) and Cody Stanley (UNC-Wilmington). Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) joins Roller as the All-League Designated Hitters.

OMAHA, Neb. – The American Baseball Coaches Association announced the ABCA/Rawlings Sporting Goods All-American teams on Wednesday, June 17.
Among the First Team honorees are six players participating in this year’s College World Series including Arizona State starting pitcher Mike Leake, LSU starting pitcher Louis Coleman, Arizona State catcher Carlos Ramirez, UNC first baseman Dustin Ackley, ASU outfielder Jason Kipnis and Virginia utility player Danny Hultzen. OMAHA, Neb. – Arkansas used a game-tying, two-run homer from center fielder Brett Eibner in the top of the ninth and game-winning RBI double from left fielder Andrew Darr three innings later to score a 4-3, come-from-behind win over Virginia before a crowd of 21,383 Wednesday night at Rosenblatt Stadium. The Virginia Cavaliers and Arkansas Razorbacks will face off tonight at 7pm Eastern time in an elimination game. The winner of the game will face off against the LSU Tigers on Friday at 1pm. The Cavaliers enter with a 49-14-1 record and a 1-1 mark in the College World Series. Virginia lost game 1 of the CWS to LSU by a score of 9-5. (FULL RECAP) then the Cavaliers eliminated Cal-State Fullerton by a score of 7-5. (FULL RECAP). Arkansas enters with a 40-23 record and also 1-1 in the College World Series. Arkansas won game 1 of the CWS by defeating Cal-State Fullerton 10-6. (FULL RECAP). The Razorbacks would lose their next game of the CWS to SEC rival LSU by a score of 9-1. The third day of action in the College World Series kicks off with Cal State Fullerton taking on the Virginia Cavaliers in an elimination game. Cal-State Fullerton enters with a 47-15 record and an 0-1 record in the CWS after losing to 10-6. Virginia enters with a 48-14-1 record while also being 0-1 in the CWS after losing to LSU 9-5. The Cavaliers sent Robert Morey to the hill as he has a 3-0 record in 17 appearances (8 starts) accumulating a 3.11 ERA while striking out 83 batters in 63.2 innings. Read the rest of this entry »

Share The third day of the College World Series will feature an elimination game between Virginia and Cal-State Fullerton at 2pm eastern time. The two teams faced off last year in the Fullerton Regional which was eventual won by the Titans. The second game of the evening will face two SEC rivals with LSU and Arkansas fourth time this season. LSU took two out of three games in Fayetteville. The LSU Tigers took on the Virginia Cavaliers in the second game of the College World Series. The Tigers entered the game with a 51-16 record while Virginia has a 48-13-1 record. Virginia sent freshman LHP Danny Hultzen to the mound as he sports a 9-1 record with a 2.09 ERA while LSU countered with Sophomore RHP Anthony Ranaudo is 10-3 with a 2.95 ERA. HOUSTON, TX – After leading his team to the program’s first appearance at the NCAA College World Series, Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor was named the National Coach of the Year by the National College Baseball Writers Association.
The award, which was voted on by the NCBWA Board of Directors, was chosen from a list that included all Division I Conference Coaches of the Year and the coaches of the eight NCAA College World Series teams. O’Connor, who was the only coach to appear on every voter’s ballot, received the honor Saturday morning at the Omaha Press Club.
