CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Right-hander Bryant Gaines tossed 5 2/3 shutout innings, and Levi Michael and Mark Fleury each homered to lift No. 1 North Carolina to a two-game sweep of Princeton, 6-1, Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. Somerset, NJ — Monmouth won five first-place votes to find itself in its familiar position atop the Northeast Conference baseball preseason poll. The Hawks have earned the moniker of NEC preseason favorite in three of the past four years. Central Connecticut State collected two first-place nods to finish second in the vote by the conference’s eight head coaches followed by Wagner which garnered the remaining first-place vote in third. The league office released the annual rankings on Thursday as a prelude to its 23rd season of Division I baseball.

Gotham Baseball has put out there weekend recap for Week 9. They name Vin Avella of Wagner the Beast of the Week after going 7-14 for the week. He had a strong weekend against Fairleigh Dickinson where he hit two homers with nine RBI. Somerset, NJ — Defending Northeast Conference champion Monmouth sits atop the 2008 NEC Baseball Coaches Poll as the favorite to capture its fourth league title. The Hawks received six first-place nods to finish ahead of Quinnipiac in the voting. Central Connecticut State, a three-time champion this decade, claimed third.
