usa-baseball-logo(CARY, N.C.) – Casey McGrew (Wright State) drove a double down the left field line and Gerrit Cole (UCLA) stuck out eight as the Blue Team defeated the Red Team, 5-2, at the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) Trials, Friday, at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

For the first three innings of the intrasquad game, the pitching ruled. Starting pitchers Cody Martin (Gonzaga) of the Red Team and Gerrit Cole of the Blue Team held their respective opponents off the board for the first three as they combined for only one hit. Read the rest of this entry »

Recapping the action from the Fullerton Regional at Goodwin Field on Sunday.

Utah- 9, Gonzaga- 7

Led by a 5-for-5 performance by freshman Tyler Yagi, the Utah baseball team defeated Gonzaga in an elimination game of the NCAA Regional on Sunday afternoon, 9-7.

With the win, Utah turns around to play Cal State Fullerton in the regional title game tonight beginning at 6:10 p.m. (PT, 7:10 MT). The Utes would have to beat the Titans twice to win the regional.

Yagi, who tied his career-high for hits, led a Utes offense that has scored 20 runs and banged out 33 hits in their two elimination games since an opening night loss to Cal State Fullerton on Friday.

Cal St. Fullerton- 7, Gonzaga- 4

FULLERTON, CA- Cal State Fullerton senior catcher Dustin Garneau finished 5-for-5 with three runs scored, including the go-ahead run on a Joe Scott single in the sixth, and sophomore right-hander Daniel Renken settled down to strike out six in eight innings of work as the top- seeded Titans defeated third-seeded Gonzaga, 7-4, on Saturday night at Goodwin Field in game four of the 2009 NCAA Baseball Regionals in front of 2,255 fans.

Gonzaga- 19, Georgia Southern- 10

FULLERTON, CA- No. 19 Gonzaga University pounded out 18 hits to post a 19-10 opening game win over #29 Georgia Southern University in the first game of the Fullerton Regional of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon. The 19 runs scored is a season-high for the Zags and the most ever scored by a Gonzaga squad in an NCAA Tournament game, a span of 22 games.

While fellow Big West power UC Irvine was dealt an incredibly difficult regional, just 20 minutes away, Cal St. Fullerton was handed what some consider the easiest road to the Super Regionals. The #2 national seed, Fullerton will be joined at Goodwin Field by the SoCon Tournament champs, Georgia Southern, the West Coast Conference champion Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Mountain West Tournament winners, Utah.

The opening game of the regional will be played at 3 pm PDT on Friday and will feature Georgia Southern taking on Gonzaga. The second game of the regional will see Cal St. Fullerton play Utah at 7 pm PDT. The first elimination game is at 2 pm PDT on Saturday, with the winner’s bracket championship game at 6 pm PDT. The second elimination game is at 2 pm PDT on Sunday with the first regional championship game at 6 pm PDT. If necessary, there will be a second regional championship game at 6 pm PDT on Monday.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament and clinched its first ever West Coast Conference Title with a 14-3 WCC Championship Series clinching victory over Loyola Marymount University Saturday afternoon. The Zags will be making their fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament and the first since 1981. That year was also the last time a Gonzaga team won a conference title (Nor-Pac Conference). The West Coast Conference Championship Series between Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount begins tonight, and the conference will be offering live free video streaming through the WCC website.  To access the video player click here. Gonzaga won the WCC regular season with a 14-7 record, and Loyola Marymount finished second with a 13-8 record in league play. The Zags took the season series between the two teams two games to one. Four different West Coast Conference programs shared in the All-Conference individual honors, with San Diego’s James Meador and Gonzaga’s Matt Fields highlighting this year’s honorees. Meador and Fields were near unanimous selections as WCC Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, while Saint Mary’s Troy Channing was a unanimous selection for Freshman of the Year honors, and Pepperdine’s Denny Duron took home the second-ever WCC Defensive Player of the Year award. Gonzaga Head Coach Mark Machtolf was named WCC Coach of the Year after leading the Zags to the program’s first ever regular season crown. Read the rest of this entry »
