Rutgers Baseball Announces 2010-2011 Recruiting Class

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 19, 2009) – Rutgers head baseball coach Fred Hill has announced the signing of seven scholastic standouts to National Letters of Intent.

The group includes infielder Nick Favatella (Washington Township, N.J.), outfielders Joseph D’Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Brian O’Grady (Warminster, Pa.), catcher Michael Zavala (Randolph, N.J.) and pitchers Charlie Lasky (Freehold, N.J.), Slater McCue (Radnor, Pa.) and Andrew Sullivan (Monroe, N.J.).

JohnScolinosPepperdine MALIBU, Calif.John Scolinos, head baseball coach of the Pepperdine Waves from 1946 to 1960, died Saturday morning at the age of 91.

Funeral arrangements are unknown at this time.

Scolinos won 263 games in 15 seasons as the Waves’ skipper and his clubs posted an overall winning percentage of .546. Only Dave Gorrie recorded more victories at Pepperdine, accumulating 409 triumphs between 1979 and 1988.

SammySolisUSD The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 73 in our countdown with San Diego LHP Sammy Solis. He is a 6-5 228 pound lefty out of Agua Frias High School and Litchfield Park Arizona. He had a career record of 25-8 in high school while recording 398 strikeouts, which is second most in state history at the 4A division in Arizona. Heading into his senior campaign, he was named a preseason All-American by Rawlings.

MarkMachtolfGonzaga SPOKANE, Wash. - The defending West Coast Conference champion Gonzaga University baseball team has announced its 2010 schedule. The Bulldogs 2010 slate features four teams that appeared in last season’s NCAA Tournament along with a number of matchups against teams from the Big 12, Big West and Pacific-10 Conferences.

"We are really looking forward to getting out, playing one of the nation’s toughest schedules and building off of last year’s success," commented 2009 WCC Coach of the Year Mark Machtolf. "Once again we have put together a very challenging schedule that will help us prepare for an always competitive WCC schedule later in the season."

JasonGill LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Second-year Head Coach Jason Gill has announced a 2010 Loyola Marymount University baseball schedule that features 16 games against 2009 NCAA Regional teams, including a home-and-home two-game series against 2009 College World Series qualifier Cal State Fullerton. In just his first season as a Division I Head Coach last year, Gill guided LMU to its first West Coast Conference Championship appearance since 2005.

SantaClaraGeoffKlein SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University’s baseball program has initiated its fall training, with a focus on skills development, strength and conditioning and individual instruction. The theme `commitment’ is being emphasized as the program prepares for its first official team practice Monday, October 19.

"We’re trying to get a number of things established this time of year," said ninth-year Santa Clara head baseball coach Mark O’Brien. "First and foremost is the commitment level. Equally important is the infrastructure; how we do things, how we run our offense, how we run our defense, almost establishing a team identity in a sense."

WestCoastConference Kendall Rogers of Rivals continues his series of articles previewing teams heading into fall ball with the West Coast Conference. The Gonzaga Bulldogs won the conference’s regular season and the subsequent post-season championship series to make the NCAA Tourney before bowing out after three games in the Fullerton regional.
