Thought this would be a good time to do a follow up on some of the freshmen who have been contributing to their respective teams, as the regular portion of the season has concluded and conference tourneys are ready to begin.
I like to use OPS percentage as a gauge as the equation includes power factors as well as on-base frequency. I have also included the HR and Extra-base hits frequencies to show a player propensity for delivering a big hit. With the conferences getting ready to do battle this week, we included the overall batting averages and also batting averages in conference play only. Read the rest of this entry »

SAN FRANCISCO - Senior Matt Lieb homered and San Francisco had the winning run on first base in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t come all the way back, as the Dons (29-21) fall to Saint Mary’s 6-5 in non-conference action at Benedetti Diamond on Wednesday afternoon. The Gaels (23-23-1) evened the season series with USF at two games a piece.
Down 6-4 in the bottom of the ninth, USF forged a two out rally, started by Lieb’s pinch hit homerun to right field. Junior third baseman Zach Kim walked and Railey singled to put runners at the corners, but freshman designated hitter Connor Bernatz grounded out to second base to end the threat and the game, 6-5. LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Cal State Northridge (21-25) rode a wave of offense to its 21st victory Wednesday, notching three consecutive doubles in the fourth and cruising to a 4-2 victory over UNLV (20-24). The Northridge pitching effort returned to form behind a strong start from Drew Muren, who tossed five shutout frames before handing off to Davin Tate and the rest of the bullpen.
Muren wrapped us his first career shutout appearance in the fifth by facing just four batters and also posted two perfect innings. The freshman right-hander only got into any real trouble in the second, when Jesse Wight smacked a leadoff double for the Rebels. Muren, however, promptly picked him off and struck out the second man of the inning. Muren then surrendered a single and a walk before getting a fly out to finish the inning.
