Share The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today with number 89 in our countdown with Oregon State sophomore RHP Sam Gaviglio. He is a 6’1 170 pound righthander out of Ashland High School in Ashland Oregon. He picked up three letters in high school playing under Don Senestrero. In his senior season, he went a perfect 13-0 with a 0.50 ERA including 108 strikeouts while picking up 5A Pitcher of the Year award. The Tampa Bay Rays selected him in the 40th round but decided to attend Oregon State to play under Pat Casey.

Walla Walla, Washington – After nearly 30 years, summer baseball in picturesque Walla Walla will be back at Borleske Stadium in 2010.
Pacific Baseball Ventures, LLC (PBV), a group of investors with strong ties to the Walla Walla community, announces today that they have been granted an expansion franchise in the West Coast League (WCL). The team will begin administrative operations in Walla Walla in November of 2009, and will play a full WCL schedule starting in June 2010. They will play home games at historic Borleske Stadium, bringing minor-league style baseball back to the park for the first time since 1983, when it last hosted the likes of Hall of Famers Ozzie Smith and Tony Gwynn.

DURHAM, N.C.–Mississippi and Washington State lead all schools by placing five players apiece on Baseball America’s top prospects lists for 18 different summer college leagues and Team USA. Last summer, Louisiana State and Texas each led the nation with five players apiece on BA’s summer league lists, and those two teams wound up facing off for the national championship at the College World Series.
BA ranked the top 30 prospects for the talent-rich Cape Cod League, and the top 10 prospects in 17 other summer college leagues. In addition, the top 20 Team USA prospects were ranked.

Share The Corvallis Knights lead the West Division with a 16-4 record. On July 3, they drew a league-record crowd of 3,506 against the Bend Elks. The Knights won 9-2; Matt Andriese (UC-Riverside) started and got the win, went six innings, allowed five hits, struck out seven. The winning run came on a home run by Dylan Jones (Mount Hood CC) in the bottom of the fourth. Richie Jiminez (Riverside CC) leads the league in hitting with a .429 average. James Nygren (Oregon State) has a record of 2-0, 2.33 ERA. Andriese is 2-0, 0.60 ERA. Read the rest of this entry »

Share John Savage and the baseball program have signed nine high school seniors for 2009-10

LOS ANGELES – UCLA head baseball coach John Savage has announced that nine student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period to attend UCLA and play baseball. Aided by assistant coaches Rick Vanderhook and Steve Pearse, the fifth recruiting class under Savage includes six position players, one pitcher and one two-way player.
The Bruins’ recruiting class is highlighted by three AFLAC All-Americans – right-handed pitcher Scott Griggs, infielder David Nick and catcher Max Stassi. The nine talented ballplayers, currently seniors in high school, will enroll at UCLA in the fall of 2009.

NORMAN, Okla. — Throughout the summer, SoonerSports.com will bring fans weekly updates of current Sooners competing in the numerous summer baseball leagues around the country. Fans can also access information on former Sooners playing in Major League Baseball and its minor league affiliates.

Summer Collegiate League
Doug Buser (Kitsap Bluejackets) and Garrett Buechele (Palm Springs Power) continue their outstanding play in the West Coast League. On July 18 and 20, Buser hit .500 for the Bluejackets in their series against the Corvallis Knights. The first game the Bluejackets won 4-2 but the second game they fell 3-1. For the season, Buser is hitting .328 with 13 RBIs and nine stolen bases.
