UCF Leads All Conference USA Baseball Programs in Team GPA

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – Already having set two program academic records in 2008-09, UCF baseball learned that its efforts in the classroom are standing out in Conference USA as well. The Knights ranked first of all C-USA baseball teams with an annual grade-point average of 3.174 to receive the league’s Sports Academic Award.

ATHENS, Ga. – Jed Bradley scattered five runs over six innings and Jason Haniger went 4-for-5 with a home run to help No. 10 Georgia Tech (22-8-1) knock off top-ranked Georgia (29-7), 11-6, Tuesday night at Foley Field.

Bradley (2-2) tied a career-high with seven strikeouts to help the Yellow Jackets to their fifth win over a ranked opponent this season and their first against the nation’s top-ranked team since the 2003 season. A year ago, the Phoenix became the first team in seven seasons to win both the regular season and tournament titles en route to a 44-18 season and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. Cullowhee, N.C. – With the first pitch of the 2009 season just nine days away, the Western Carolina Catamount baseball team continued its preparations over the weekend with a trio of intrasquad scrimmage situations. Team practice commenced the first weekend of February, giving WCU nearly 20 days of practice to gear up for its season opener.

Cullowhee, N.C. – Senior J.C. Lyons rapped a game-winning single to left field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning of a five-inning contest Thursday evening as the Gold Squad seized game one of the Western Carolina Catamount Baseball Fall World Series with a 3-2 extra inning victory.

Sophomore Matt Johns opened the second extra frame with a one-out double before advancing to third following a two-out intentional pass and a hit batsman. With the bases full, Lyons rifled a shot to left that dropped in for his lone base hit of the night allowing Johns to score the game winner for the Gold Squad, which wore the off-white, vintage uniforms.
