CINCINNATI – Xavier head coach Scott Googins has announced the 2009 Xavier baseball schedule, which features four tournaments: the North Carolina State Tournament (Feb. 20-21), the Bethune-Cookman University Spring Break Challenge (Mar. 6-7), the Spartan Classic (Mar. 14-15) and the Joe Nuxall Classic (Apr. 14-15). The Musketeers are looking to have another strong year and reclaim the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season championship.

Share Head coach Scott Googins announced five signees for the 2009-10 signing class

CINCINNATI – The Xavier baseball team and head coach Scott Googins has announced that five future Musketeers have signed National Letters of Intent to play at XU beginning in the 2009-10 season. Seth Dawes (Chillicothe, Ohio – Chillicothe High School), Vinny Nittoli (Gibsonia, Pa. – Pine-Richland High School), Patrick Paligraf (Fishers, Ind. – Cathedral High School), Jonathan Richard (Versailles, Ohio – Versailles High School) and Seth Willoughby (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Watterson High School) will be joining the team in the fall of 2009 and will look to make an immediate impact on the squad.

Xavier Baseball Summer League Winners
CINCINNATI – Several members of the Xavier baseball team have had a successful summer break playing in summer leagues in the area. Congratulations to Billy O’Conner, Steve Brown, Ryan Bellamy and Charlie Leesman, members of the Cincinnati Steam, the 2008 Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League Champions. Danny Rosenbaum was a member of the North Woods League Champion Thunder Bay Border Cats. Additionally, several Musketeers were named to All-League as well as All-Star teams. Junior Frank Pesanello hit what was the eventual game-winning, pinch-hit, three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to guide the Northeastern University baseball team to an 8-6 victory over the Rhode Island Rams at Bill Beck Field in Kingston, Rhode Island on Tuesday evening.
Pesanello’s homer was his sixth of the season, putting him second on the team behind captain Mike Lyon, who has eight on the season. Lyon, who has been anchoring the Husky attack all season, led the team with three hits, including two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Read the rest of this entry »

MOBILE, Ala. – Behind eight extra-base hits – including home runs from Sawyer Carroll and Bryan Rose – the No. 20 Kentucky baseball team exploded for 10 runs in its season opener and got a stellar pitching performance from lefty Chris Rusin, downing the Xavier Musketeers 10-1, in the 2008 season opener, on Saturday afternoon at South Alabama’s Stanky Field. In the Atlantic 10, he lists Charlotte as the clear favorite with Richmond, Fordham, and St. Bonaventure as contenders. His darkhorse in the conference is Xavier. The full A-10 preview is available here. In America East, Eric can not decided on any clear favorite listing Albany, Binghamton, Maine and Stony Brook as contenders for the conference championship. The Duke Blue Devils will host Temple on Tuesday and Xavier on Wednesday before opening the ACC season against the Boston College Eagles. Duke enters Tuesday’s game with a 13-1 record while Temple enters with a record of 2-7. The Owls pitching has been atrocious in the early part of the season with a 9.95 Team ERA. Jeremy Gould (0-1, 6.52 ERA) will get the start for the Blue Devils while Rob Chamra (0-0, 27.00 ERA) gets the ball for the Owls. Xavier will enter with a 1-10 record coming off a three game sweep from Vanderbilt. They beat Oakland University to pick up their only win on the season. Both Duke and Xavier have not announced starting pitchers.

The A-10 Conference has released their 2007 Pre-Season Baseball Poll. They have picked Charlotte to win the title behind third baseman Aaron Bray’s potent bat. The defending champion St. Louis and URI round out the top three. It should be an interesting season in the A-10 conference like usual and the full press release on the poll is available here.
